If I'm reading this right then what he's saying is that we will bomb Mecca in retaliation if we're attacked by islamic fundamentalists.

In retaliation to an attack on our homeland I don't see why it's a bad thing.

The terrorists want high value targets like The White House, The Pentagon, etc. If we're attacked we should retaliate by striking their highest value targets. What else do they have of value other than oil fields?

They bomb Mecca if I was American I would move as far out of that country as possible. Iraq would probably be safer. There are millions of muslims in the US who would answer a call to arms if that happened.

I care about what happens now, and now I don't want to see my country get attacked again. If a promise to bomb Mecca is the deterrent we need then we should use it as a deterrent.

We let the Soviet Union know that if they launched one nuclear weapon during the cold war that we would launch ALL of ours. It was mutually assured destruction and it kept both sides in check.
