MySpace deletes 29,000 sex offenders

Quote:
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Popular Internet social network MySpace said on Tuesday it detected and deleted 29,000 convicted sex offenders on its service, more than four times the figure it had initially reported.
Quote:
Blumenthal, who led a coalition of state authorities to lobby MySpace for more stringent safeguards for minors, and other state AGs have demanded the service begin verifying a user's age and require parental permission for minors.
http://www.reuters.com/article/domes...rpc=22&sp=true

Get parental permission? Verify a user's age? How on earth do they propose that can be accomplished?

Quote:
The families of several teenage girls sexually assaulted by MySpace members sued the service in January for failing to safeguard its young members.

I'm all about protecting children, and locking up the pieces of shit that would harm them, but this sounds like it's going down a dangerous road. Once again, blame the website instead of the parents.

Maybe someone should sue the parents for not doing the job of monitoring and safeguarding their children like they're suppose to? Why do so many parents feel that the internet is a playground that their children can enjoy unsupervised?

It is easier to put the responsibility on others . . . . that way if the kid ends up being a serial killer they can blame "the system."

You serious? Most parents have way better and more important things to do rather than keep a close eye on their kids... It's everyone else's responsibility to make sure they are safe...

Sue the parents? Don't you mean prosecute?

Don't worry - the nanny state will soon hold parents responsible for EVERYTHING kids do. Lock them parents up -- that's the solution!

It takes a village?

Eh, I'm all about personal responsibility, but surely Myspace should know better. They've created a stomping ground for young adults and I just cannot believe that they didn't have the foresight for something like this.

I don't believe that Myspace bears full culpability for this but, c'mon, they had to know it would attract predators in some form.

xxxRumor-see the end of that post? It was said sarcastically.

IMO, letting your kids go online unsupervised is just as negligent as letting toddlers play in traffic.

Staggering figure, 29,000 and excellent PR for News International/MySpace - "we combat crime against children"

Oh.. they got their rap sheets, DNA samples and sperm counts, then verified each one

Parents will be over the moon with this and let their kids back on, page views will go back up and revenue will increase.

What a load of bollocks.

Exactly... it's all about "how good we are" and "why nobody should sue us" while we are earning a buck

In a couple of years MySpace will be irrelevant, but certainly they have to do what they can now to protect kids.

Perhaps law enforcement can - somehow - step in to prevent the ability for sex offenders from signing up for services like this? Certainly it is possible, but far from easy, plus it will cost big-time.

(A thought in progress - convicted sex offenders when signing up for an Internet service are assigned some kind of digital ID. Sites like MySpace detect the ID when a person attempts to sign up. If the offender somehow gets around it, he would be in volation of his probation, etc.

Far from foolproof but something along these lines is possible)

Oh noes, not the page deletions!!! You showed 'em, Myspace...those evil sex offenders are now majorly inconvenienced and will have to build their pages with the ice cream truck backgrounds all over again...

I am a parent and I do believe in parents taking responsibility for their children and providing the proper supervision. Sex offenders are everywhere not just online.....in fact through the internet I know exactly where all of the registered sex offenders are in my city live. Parents need to be constantly aware of the dangers to their children but more importantly teach/drill their children to be able to think and deal with situations for themselves too. Too many parents do not teach their children to think and use their common sense for themselves.

Because no one wants to take responsibility for anything anymore, even if it means taking responsibility for their own offspring.

Somewhere along the line parents went from plopping their kids down in front of the tv and wandering off to do whatever and started plopping them down in front of the computer and wandering off to do whatever...

i have to agree, the parents need to take some responsibility and instill better values and judgement into their kids. not that it's the kids fault at all, but those two things never hurt a person. and they definitely should have kept a better eye on them. if their kids were at the park and a sex offender encountered them there, would they sue the park? same difference, only myspace is safer and easier to get away from the slimeballs.
