What is with all the unappreciative inconsiderate people lately??

The other day I was leaving the house and the next door neighbour came up to me as I was getting into my car and asks me if I have a phonebook that he could borrow as he had locked himself out of his house and needed to call a locksmith. Strange thing is that the yellow pages had been delivered the day before, so I go inside grab it for him and then continue on my way.

I had not given it another thought until now while watching Criss Angel rip a phone book in half and I realize that the neighbor has not yet returned the phone book that he borrowed. Now I could care less about the phone book as I never use it anyways, if I need a phone number I just get it online or call 411, but it is the principal of the matter. I mean I go out of my way to get this guy a phone book so he is not stuck outside all day until his wife gets home and then he doesn't even have the common courtesy to return the phone book or even thank me for the use of it. I could have easily just said I didn't have one and be on my way, but I usually try to help others if I am in a position to, and will always show gratitude when the tables are reversed. I am just not sure why others wouldn't do the same?

I have noticed this sort of thing more and more lately. Are people becoming more ungrateful or am I just unlucky in coming across more people with this sort of inconsiderate attitude?
