FREE of charge to see if I can help improve it. I even don't require access
to the server(s) if that would be an issue for not taken me up on my offer.
I think I could even give options for improvement just by asking some questions
about the setup and by the info you can give me by ICQ.

I'll do it for free no strings attached.....if it works good for you if it doesn't
it won't get any worse. If it works really well.....you let GFY know in a single
post so GFY can see that I'm not just talking the talk without walking the walk.

If I fail miserably I will admit it publically on GFY too. GFY can't lose in this
deal, only I can by putting my reputation on the line for free!

Thanks I'll keep that in mind in case all my other suggestions fail.....good to
have a last resort backup options....I'll find out where I can get gerbils
the steriods aren't a problem to find where I am......finding gerbils will be
harder

It's not their connection. Jupiter Hosting isn't that bad

I doubt the problem is something that can be fixed by only giving advices.
Their main problem is the database which must be huge and only some indexes
wont help.
I'm sure they have replication as well but considering the amount of writes and
the complexity of the database it needs more than a raw setup which can't be
implemented in a few hours.
Keep in mind that the last downtime, if I recall correctly, was of about 2 days
when all what was done was adding some indexes.

I'm not so sure that adding indexes is all they did. They seemed to have
purged the database as well for example browse all posts by username and
you'll see there's a lot missing. Lately GFY hasn't nearly been as busy as it
used to be. I'm not saying that I can fix it with a few tips but I'm sure it
couldn't hurt them to get another perspective on things. Do they have
replication? How is set up? Are read and write queries seperated on different
replication slaves? I think they aren't else you would see a huge difference
in browsing GFY or posting on GFY and there's not

writes always go to the master with replication. I doubt they have multi master replication , its not really doable without a heck of modifications (consider that vb is close source and you're kinda limited).

So, I'm assuming they have a one master - many slaves replication. Considering the database size keeping too many slaves its counter productive.
Now, if you've worked with huge databases and replications you know that the slaves brake pretty often due to invalid data or other replication errors. I guess you can imagine what a pain in the ass would be to resync a dead slave.

I meant are reads and writes seperated, writes to master, reads from slave.
I think you are overestimating the size of the GFY database especially when
considering that it was compacted by purging historical records.

I think the main problem is in the countless modifications they've tried over
time to solve the problem. Anyway it doesn't really matter coz obviously
they're not interested in fixing it anyway

Here's what I would like to benefit from this:

Waste less time waiting while I hang out reading/posting on GFY.

Not to downplay your skills because i have no idea what they are, but I think a company such as Playboy has quite a few programmers and systems admins and it is not just ONE person working on the system. They also have access to top developers and systems admins from Jupiter Hosting. I think they are pretty well covered and if this were an easy fix it would be in place. As for an outside perspective - I think they have that covered also, don't you?

Why insulting? I offered them to consult me for free on whatever way they
want. I didn't made any remarks about their skills or anything related to it.
I've said very clearly that if my help would work.....great and if not they
wouldn't be off any worse by just contacting me.

Often a problem hasn't got anything todo with skills and just a check with
someone and perhaps a different perspective might work. I'm not trying to
teach or show anyone a lesson. I have nothing to proof on GFY or any of it's
users. You don't see me here promoting my business either trying to get
new clients......you know why? Coz I don't have to.....and I don't mean
that to be arrogant......

I was simply offering a hand or some time to check some stuff for free
without any conditions or strings attached.....if they don't awesome no
problem at all....I don't see what's so insulting about it. I verify stuff
sometimes with others too...there's nothing wrong with that. You can't
know everything and sometimes the best could overlook something.

I also didn't claim that I'd fix things in a split second....as without any info
how would I know? I guess offering something voluntarily and not asking
money for it must be suspicious....hahaha

I only informed them that if they wanted a second opinion on anything I'd
be willing to give for it free.....if they don't want it fine too I don't see
what's wrong with that......

to discuss my skills or teach anyone a lesson. Anyone who has questions, remarks,
flames or complaints is welcome to contact me. I'll reply here if
I feel it's worth replying to I've offered my help and that's all intended to do
with this thread......now it's turning into wether I'm smarter or better than anyone
else.......the answer to that is simple I'm not and I don't pretend to
be and I certainly don't feel intimidated by people who are smarter or better
than me.

In fact I like to meet them so I can I learn something new perhaps. I have
