when does google 'reset' an expired domain

Say a domain has been active since 1998 and currently expires. How long does it take google to reset that domain so that it no longer gets any "age" consideration in relevance?

How can one tell when an old domain is considered or no-longer-considered as an 'old domain' by google?

damn good question .

my best guess would be there is no "domain wide" credit for having an old domain , i think its mostly page based . so in order to keep the "rank" credit from an old domain you would need to recreate the pages that were on the domain

i have noticed people doing this recently on .org domain sthat have recently expired.. i dont know if its just for "visual" or if its for google.

i.e. i came across some expired medical .org domains that were getting great serp for adult terms. when i visited the page it looks like an actual site like for example www.fightcancer.com and when i visit the page it looks like a cancer research website. but in the bottom of the page is hidden text links to porn pages.. at first im thinking that the site has just been hacked or something , but upon closer examination i see the domain was recently rebought . the buyer had copied the old pages from archive.org to make the site appear just as it was before it expired

Great question and totally agree with Smokey...I believe there is something to be said for looking at the 'creation date' of the registrar and the archive.org date of first spidering... I'm almost positive Google is looking at this as well. I believe some of this is vaguely referenced in one of their patent applications.

What value does a domain have if you have had it constantly registered since, say 2000, but you have never put up a page or had it spidered?

Valuable, but not as valuable as something that has shown continued growth over a period of time.

so is it counter-productive, seo-speaking (and possiblly future domain sale value), to use robots.txt to disallow archive.org?

I think even gfy disallows archive.org, I always wondered why
