Forgive my ignorance but I really dont see how thousands of people in the world trade center "deserve" to die because of any governments policies. This was not an attack on the government this was an attack on people who woke up one morning and left their wives, husbands and children expecting to return to them later in the day. They by far were not plotting to overthrow any governments they were not going to make plans to goto war with anyone. An attack on a military body is one thing but the ones who preformed this attack were nothing more then loathsome individuals with no hearts or souls. I find it hard to belive that any intillegent person would even consider that killing innocent people would be acceptable for any reason. I also feel that any person who would question or imply that this was an acceptable act is little more then those who committed them. I hope that everyone else on this board will view this with the same distaste and I do and ignore you and your post in the future regardless of what they are.

I think it would be perfectly appropriate to have this discussion just as soon as al Qaida and its fellow travellers are no longer able to function - or breathe. The U.S. learned absolutely nothing from the failures of the French and the British in the Middle East, continued to act in a completely self-serving way throughout the cold war and since, which poured fuel on a fire that we didn't start - and most likely won't be able to completely put out anyway. I think attempting to "negotiate" a peaceful settlement with Sadam or al Qaida - they are very different, regardless of the sales job little Georgie has done on the American people - is akin to Chamberlain's negotiations with Hitler in 1938.

That being said - I think that anyone who dismisses the opinion of an entire continent full of people who will be affected by our decisions - perhaps more profoundly than we are - is just about as uninformed (spelled "s-t-u-p-i-d") as the pseudo-intellectual assumption that we "deserved" this. The easiest way to CEASE to be a superpower is to act like one. We had better act like the civilized nation we claim to be, take our case to the Congress, to the country, and to the world ...

just a quick nit to pick. according to most in the country, "the people" ARE the government. unlike other countries, where the people can be "peasants" or "subjects", "peons" - however it's put.
they did attack a military body, though. i know the most dramatic attack was on the WTC, but that was not the only one.

in any case, these aren't people with the military strength to attack our military. if they attacked the military (in this case i mean a non-administrative building) they'd lose, very quickly, and with no fanfare on top of that. in other words, they would have failed. why would they knowingly go in to something, knowing they're going to die, only to fail? i think it makes sense, and i would contend that they did/do have hearts and "souls", just ones that have a different agenda than you do.
