Burning Man Approaches

At the time of this post, the man is set to burn in 47 days.

Many of you have seen the pic's and read the posts from Halcyon and myself, as well as others, about the event and no doubt I'll bring more pic's back this year.

<< My pic's thread from 2005 >>

<< My pic's thread from 2006 >>

It's a different event this year as corporations are being allowed in (with certain restrictions).

More info about this years corporate influence here.

Every year after the pic's are posted, tons of GFY'ers say they wanna go. Well, it's NOT for everyone.

The idea of holding a massive event in one of the hottest nastiest driest places on the planet seems stupid on the face of it. Why would almost 40,000 people pay over $200 for a ticket and probably $1000-1500 total to suffer in this godforsaken place for a week or more? (Read this un-happy attendees review)

You really have to want to be there to truck yourself and your gallons of drinking water in and out of the desert, an environment so extreme that dehydration and other serious bodily harm are real possibilities. As it says in large letters on their tickets, attendees voluntarily assume the risk of death. And in fact, people have died.

But, alas, this will be my fifth consecutive trip to Black Rock City. And perhaps my last.

Anyone GFY'ers going this year?

Hal! That motorhome makeover is awesome!

See you on the Playa. Even with 40k people there, you are pretty easy to spot.

From a 2004 report:

Attendees are overwhelmingly white, college-educated, middle class Americans from urban or suburban communities. The vast majority (67%) are between the ages of 21 and 40, with a smaller percentage (27%) between the ages of 41 and 60. Most (70%) are straight, with smaller percentages identifying themselves as bisexual (18%) or gay (8%). About 40% are single, while 34% are either married or live with a domestic partner. Burners tend to be relatively affluent, with 24% earning between $25-49K/year (2003 salary) and 25% earning $50K/year or more. A little more than a third (34%) of burners are homeowners.

This marks the end of Burning Man, once they let in the Corporates, it's all gonna go down the shitter.

Perhaps.

But if change is eventual then at least BORG seems to be handling it the right way.
  • Corp's are not allowed to have any signs.
  • Their name can't be displayed anywhere.
  • No logos.
  • No brochures or other literature.
  • No business cards.
  • They can't even talk about their products.

To see the man powered by solar energy during this time of heightened awareness of climate change/global warming isn't such a bad thing. A giant windmill is going to help provide power too. Google is going to create a 3-D map of Burning Man. (The top brass at Google are all long time burners).

If allowing corp's to come in this year is indeed an experiment, then it seems (so far) that it's being done in a way that makes sense and doesn't interfere with burner culture.

It seems like a slippery slope. Not that burning man isn't already taking advantage of what people think it means to them.

Those were some interesting stats. I've been wanting to go for years, but its never quite worked out. I think it would be cool if there was a festival in a little less harsh of location very similar to burning man, but thats probably too much to ask for. If I went I'd probably be avoiding the sun for most of the day and i'd only be out at night. I burn easy and I hate the smell of all sunscreens.

Technically speaking, burning man is very much NOT green... things get burned, people travel insane number of miles to attend the event, and most of the run their stuff on generators.

Enjoy it. Green would be nice.

if they live in california they would be paupers..and not homeowners..and it seems the gay % is much higher than at your regular homedepot hangout..
seems almost half of the men there are looking to smoke the pipe ( 8% + 18%), perhaps it is new new generations of metro-sexual men...
