THEY call it plasma envy. When the 106-centimetre plasma TV screen hit the market a few years ago it was hard to imagine anyone wanting a bigger set. Now, sales of 127-centimetre plasma TVs are on the rise and yesterday the mother of all screens hit the market.

Panasonic is said to offer the world's largest plasma screen, 261 centimetres diagonally (2.4 metres by 1.4 metres), weighing 220 kilograms and costing $105,000 (excluding installation).

The trend for ever larger screens is also sending home power bills sky high. TVs are fast overtaking fridges and freezers as greenhouse gas culprits.

The 261-centimetre screen was ideal for clubs and pubs broadcasting sporting events, said Panasonic's director for consumer electronics, Paul Reid.

"But we have installed some in high-end luxury homes in Sydney," he said. "The trend is increasingly to larger screens. People want bigger and bigger all the time. There is a degree of one-upmanship."

The trend carries an environmental cost. Based on specifications for its smaller models, Panasonic's 261-centimetre screen could be consuming as much as 1.08 kilowatts of energy, estimated an energy expert at RMIT, Alan Pears. That compared with anywhere between 50 and 200 watts for an 80 centimetre conventional TV, he said.

Mr Pears said the range of energy consumption across brands, models and sizes made it hard for consumers to judge the efficiency of a particular TV. He called for energy labelling.

The larger plasma TV screens also came with speakers, further fuelling the energy bill, said Clare Donovan, of the Australian Conservation Foundation. She estimated that a 165-centimetre Panasonic plasma TV selling for about $15,000 would consume 280 watts,and 100 watts for each of the three speakers that came with it.

I wonder if it has it's own cooling system? Plasmas put out alot of heat, have burn in, and don't last near as long as LCD.

But for some reason all the larger TV's are plasma. Why can't they make LCD's that large?

lol, u got me on that one

but seriously, plasmas are already better than lcds in contrast, blackness, and viewing angles, and SIZE

but lcds don't have burn in, have higher resolutions, use way less power and less heat, but are still trying to catch up on size at a decent price

you cant argue those facts can you?

so right now plasmas have a little better picture but lcds are catching up

plasmas burn in, that sucks

It's just that your info on plasma's is very circa 2005 ...

3rd-gen plasma screens do NOT have burn-in issues (unless maybe you leave the screen on the same image for like a year maybe), and with 15000:1 contrast ratios, you cannot tell me they don't rival (or blow away) the best LCDs. In the past plasma screens fell short on maximum resolution, but now 1080i is pretty much the standard that all new plasma flat panels are displaying natively.

Plasma displays have ALWAYS had a better black reproduction than LCDs too!

If you put a Plasma side-by-side with an LCD viewing a movie with alot of warm, brilliant colors in it, the Plasma is going to kick some LCD ass, sorry to say ...

If you had said the exact same things in 2005, I would have agreed with you whole-heartedly man, but Samsung and Matsushita (Panasonic) had invested far too much into plasma to let it be upstaged ...

In late 2005, both companies (along with PIONEER) pooled their resources to further develop plasma, and now plasma holds it's own against LCD very well!

For anyone having difficulty with the cm thing, it is about 100 inches. Not really that big. Especially for people that have front projectors.

No worries man it's all good.

I'm actually agreeing with you that plasmas picture quality is way better and that LCD is still trying to catch up to plasmas on picture quality.

That was an interesting article you posted above on what the plasma companies are doing to combat burn in. (moving the picture ever so slightly)

I watch the MOJO HD channel a lot and I noticed that they move their logo around frequently. Sometimes it's at the top sometimes it's at the bottom. I wonder if they do that to help prevent burn in as well?

I just recently bought a LCD and I really wanted to get the plasma because of the picture quality looked so much better. Sam's Club probably had 30 plasmas and 30 LCDS on display for me to choose from. The guy talked me out of the plasma because he showed me on some of their display models of the plasmas they already had some burn in and some already had areas burnt out!

So that combined with the heat output when I placed my hand behind the Plasma I ended up getting a LCD. A 46" by Westinghouse for around 1400 bucks. I set out to get a 42" Visio 900 bucks but it looked smaller than i expected. These are definitely not top of the line but this is my first HDTV.

The SONY LCDS they had looked awesome but they were like 3500 bucks!

I watched Planet Earth last night on Discovery HD channel and it was awesome compared to my old 36" Toshiba Black Tube I used to have.

I'll probably get another better one in 2009 when there will be a lot more channels pumping out 1080 instead of just 720.
