Smoking is going to get even more expensive

Quote:
WASHINGTON ? Smokers would pay an extra 61 cents per pack of cigarettes to expand health insurance to about 2 million children under a tentative deal worked out Tuesday between Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee.

The tobacco tax increase would boost the federal levy from 39 cents per pack to $1, an increase of 156%. It would raise about $35 billion over five years to pay for the largest expansion of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) since its creation a decade ago.

"It really does come down to a choice between children and tobacco," said Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., who originally proposed the 61-cent increase. "This is a 'two-fer.' It does decrease smoking, and it does connect public health care costs with one of the drivers of that cost, and that's tobacco."

Some details remain to be worked out before the committee votes on the package, probably next week. Expanding the popular program by taxing tobacco, however, has broad support, including from Republicans such as Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.

"Tobacco politics has changed very dramatically," said Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore. In a non-binding vote in March, the Senate voted 59-40 for a tobacco tax hike of no more than 61 cents to expand the children's health program.

Two ideas.
#1: Just stay the fuck away from smokers. I'm sure they won't miss you.
#2: Even though you don't understand the appeal, stay the fuck out of smokers' business.

Nope...how about smokers stay the fuck out of our way?

I love non-smoking buildings where smokers all hang outside the front door and you have to get through the cancer gauntlet in order to get in.

I also love enjoying a fabulous dinner, only for a waft of smoke to hit my nostrils.

I also love eating in a cafe and watching smokers put their cigs out in their food. Nothing more appetizing than that.

I grew up in a time where smokers ruled the world, and my mom was one of the worst offenders.

Back in the day if you didn't smoke, you were treated like a negro in the 60's..back to the bus.

If you went to a restaurant you got the worst seating.

People smoked at just about every event you attended.

Going grocery shopping? Smokers there, these people actually put their cigarettes out on the floors of stores.

Most people would light up before they would even ask you if it was okay, could be your home, your car, they didn't care, they looked cool like the movie stars on the big screen.

I'm glad it's finally swinging the other direction. I personally am a libertarian, but have some liberal social leanings. I think people should be free to destroy themselves if they wish to, with whatever it is they wish to, as long as they are legal adults...however...once those habits begin to infringe upon the rights of others...*and yes I do have a right to clean air* then that's where the line stops.

Like the old saying goes, my freedoms being at my knuckle, but end before your nose.

Order them from Europe. I've been getting them for my grandmother from Russia and Ukraine for probably 3 years or more. They're almost $30 a carton if she buys them locally (in the Southeast where I think they're fairly cheap) and I get them for about $14 a carton from overseas. She's never complained about them being any different.

Did someone fail to get laid last night? Why do you seem so upset about what I said? I didn't condemn smokers, I merely stated my opinion on the matter with no negativity?

If you wanna smoke by all means smoke away, just don't cludder the front doors to a club, mall etc so I have to take a minute away from my life because I breathed in your choice to kill yourself. If your choice effects my health then it becomes my business.

Now go get laid, you might not be as moody afterwards.

While I stopped smoking I do not agree with picking on them.

In my state at least you can barely smoke anywhere anyways and it must be 500 ft from any entrance as well assuming you can smoke outside (some cities you can not). I really feel you should leave it up to the business itself and let competition decide. If there is a demand for smoke free establishments they would pop up and supply and demand would take over without the need to boycot one over the other.

Lastly I find the taxing crazy, specially since a great deal of smokers are more on the poor side than non smokers. This tax is just taxing the poor to help assist the poor. Does not really seem that right to me.

competition said years ago that it wont work thats why the laws are here no smoker will go to a non smoking club and here in chicago i would say in a club 30-50% of people are smoking the % of smokers you see once you hit the clubs is alot higher then with the general population.

95% of the restaurants here you could smoke at before the non smoking ban idiots that cant get thier way in normal life go bitch to the government to tell people how to live and behave.

There are both non-smoking and smoking cafes... but for some reason, you non-smokers insist that the cafes where the owner, staff and almost all customers smoke are smoke-free.

There are both non-smoking and smoking restaurants... but for some reason, you smokers insist on going to the smoking restaurants, then whine about the smoke.

Just about all government buildings are smoke-free... but for some reason, you non-smokers whine about the bit of smoke you pass by when walking through the entrance. Nevermind the poisonous gas your SUV emits when you pass us by, eh?

It reminds of the following (true) story.
Once upon a time, a woman worked in a company where most people smoked. Now, smoking was banned in offices already, but in the break room, people actually did smoke. Of course, the woman objected to that - she would have none of that nasty smoke! So, after much campaigning from her side, the company created a special "smokers" break room.
Initially, she was happy. That lasted maybe a week... until she realized that pretty much everyone, both smokers and non-smokers, was going to the smokers break room, leaving her by herself in the old break room.
She got annoyed - how dare people avoid her like that! Once again she campaigned, now to get rid of the smokers break room altogether. With the help of some paternalistic laws, she finally got what she wished - an entirely smoke-free building! Now, the smokers were forced to stand outside in the rain during breaks.
The annoying cunt resigned two months later, though, because everyone at work pretty much hated her and avoided her like the plague.

I, for one, am perfectly happy not going to the non-smoking clubs, bars and restaurants, and I don't particularly mind not smoking in government buildings. I do mind, however, that I am forced to pay an 80% tax on my cigarettes. I also mind that the government is going to ban smoking in *all* bars, clubs, restaurants, etc, and has already banned smoking in all other workplaces - including those with 100% smokers. And most of all, I mind the annoying twats who can't seem to comprehend the rather simple fact that nobody is forcing them to spend time around my smoke.

If I can live without going to all the non-smoking places, why can't you non-smokers live without going to all the smoking places?

My non-smoking doesn't effect you in any way shape or form. You drug addict smokers need to take a hit every 2 seconds and you would smoke in the emphysema ward if you could. Your fucking dirty filthy smoking cost the rest of us BILLIONS in health care every year. Hospitals could be using resources to treat people who haven't destroyed their own health by choice.

Damn PMS much?

Them starbucks drinkers are busting the seams of healthcare as well with the 1200 calorie drinks, and those that wear cologne or perfume may be putting others at risk to an alergy attack, then I also like peace and quiet during my meals and watching movies yet those damn cell phones are going off or kids are running rampant.

Hi there.

Smoking costs billions in healthcare every year. True. Smoking also brings in billions in taxes every year. Next to that, it also saves billions in pensions and such every year - smokers, on average, live 7 years less than non-smokers, and thereby, on average, die a lot closer to retirement age. Finally, it even saves billions in healthcare costs every year - the smokers who die from lungcancer tend not to need much healthcare after that.

And look at over-population. Not only do smokers die younger, smoking also decreases fertility, thus making us smokers less likely to bring yet more polluting human beings in the world.

In short, smoking makes the world a better place

Another interesting thing to consider... If smoking raises healthcare costs so much, why isn't the tax money it brings in used solely to pay the healthcare costs of smoking and to support smoke-prevention campaigns?

Also, using tax increases to curb smoking comes across as a rather sick form of profiteering from addiction. Just like drug dealers are able to get ridiculously high prices from their addicted customers, the government is using addiction as an easy way to extort money from a relatively small group of people, then apparently using that money for completely different purposes.
