The hubby is highly allergic to spider bite - venomous or even non-venomous cause huge nasty sores to form. He would have had the 12 gauge out after a spider that size. lmao

Keep those things down there with y'all... don't let them travel the short distance up here to our house!! I hate cleaning up after his tirades with blunt objects when he's after a spider. :winkwink:

Odd thing... when we first moved here, a 3' snake dropped out of the basement ceiling on him and he calmly got ahold of it, snapped its neck and tried to hand it to ME! But a spider, while he's not afraid of 'em, he kills on sight.

Neat pic Ace Ace!

CDSmith 09-02-2002 07:17 PM

Thank Christ that we don't have spiders that big up here in the great white north... I would quite literally shit my skivvies if one of those crawled up the wall in my house. Outside I would probably blast the hose at hit and drown the sucker.

That thing could kill my dog.

Clovis 09-02-2002 07:28 PM

I think thats a common Orb Weaver, a very beneficial spider. But from the looks of the web she might be jonesing for some rock so I would lock up all my valuables if I was you.

Ace-Ace 09-02-2002 07:31 PM

Haven't killed it off - it's still out back in the garden. I haven't seen anything close to that size around here, ever. Even though I freak out when a moth runs into my head, I'll leave this guy outside (alive) - doesn't seem to be doing too much harm there!

PhilipX 09-02-2002 07:34 PM

These are dirty spiders. Bah!!!!!!

galleryseek 09-02-2002 08:17 PM

yep that looks like an Orb Weaver, it would be a sin to kill it. They kill lots of insects, spin gorgeous webs, and are all around good to have in the neighborhood.

Whoever was talking about Daddy Longlegs is right too, they don't bite humans. They DO eat the hell out of other spiders though.

Shit, I've got one too:

Jesus that fucker's big!
Make her happy - put a blue bug light near her web. She'll get more skeeters than the light will.
We've had some of those here in VA; those orb weavers get huge.

bryany 09-03-2002 12:11 AM

Missing your cat? HEHE

"That's a Big Bitch!" Deus Bigalo :thumbsup

Juge 09-03-2002 04:03 AM

Holy shit. That's huge!

Ace-Ace 09-03-2002 11:42 AM

It's in the exact same position it was yesturday, but this time it's food is gone. Every picture I've seen of these things has it right in the middle, gripping on with one of it's middle sets of legs! THEY DO NOT MOVE!

Hear, hear, on the great white north. I don't like the dead of winter, but I like how it deters some of the nastier species of bugs. For example, I don't think I could live in the same state/province as a scorpion. But Ace-Ace is in Ohio, so that spider should be dead in a couple of months anyway.

And yes, I know we're talking about arachnids here, not insects. They're still bugs.

I've never seen a spider JUMP per say? I've seen them crawl fast; are we talking full rabbit-like springing action? Cause if so, I'm not getting within 5' of this thing for another picture.

Heh. I get 50 or 60 of those in my tent when I go camping. They are cute and harmless.

Only thing worse than 4 inch spiders are 4 inch bugs with wings. I'd rather deal with bears, or wolves, or whatever... than bugs.

Agreed. I flip out when a moth drills my face coming home at night, with the porch light on...

Middle of the page there is a wood spider...get about 6 inches long....runs fast as a mouse...can jump several FEET into the air.

When I lived in the Mojave, you never knew what the fuck was going to be in the house. You'd have to shake out any clothes that were in the closet too long, because Black Widows will nest in sleeves and pant legs. Scorpions like sneakers and boots.

I heard a weird rustling one night, came out of the office to see WTF was up. One of the cats had a big ass centipede, and being a cat, was entertaining itself by killing the pede.

Since we moved to Texas, I think that two of the cats have gotten their paws whacked by scorpions. They had to hop around for a few days until the swelling went down.

All those bugs are nasty, but one fucker I truly hate is the Horse Fly. Ever been bit by one of those motherfuckers? It hurts! Big, nasty, blood sucking freak with wings.

The spider in the picture is an Orb Spider. They are beneficial and
handsome except they spin webs all over the place. They are rarely found inside and love to eat mosquitoes.:thumbsup

Here is a pic of tarantula that was walking by my office about a month ago!

I think my spider would eat your spider.:winkwink:
