New computer, widescreen, how to change to non-wide setting?

Just got a new computer, and it's a flat wide screen monitor, and the settings are defaulted at stretching everything to fit the wide screen

anyone know how to get this back to the normal settings? i've checked everywhere in control panel -> monitor area, and also in many other sections but i cant find the simple answer to fixing this

thanks!

Vista, XP or OSX... right click desktop and set it to a widescreen ratio resolution. 20s and 22s are 1680x1050, 24s are 1920x1200.

ok i did that, it looks better now, BUT it's now making it so i have to move my mouse over to see the rest of the screen, so if i go to the very top of my screen i cant view the toolbar at the bottom i have to move my mouse down to get down to the bottom

find out the max resolution of your screen

depending on your video card, go to your SETTINGs for the desktop and pick that one, all will be "neat"

I have a 21 inch Gateway. The max setting is 1680X1050 but it makes everything so damn small. So I have it set at 1280X768 which is not exactly what it needs to be to make it not look strecthed but it's very close. This gives me the same appearance as 1024X768 would be on a normal screen.

Until sites start being design for screens wider than 1280 on non-widescreen, then having my setting any higher just isn't useful. Considering most sites mistaking still design for 800X600 I don't see any changes soon. Trying to watch any video on 1680X1050 is useless. Everything is so small.
