I have too much free time and I wouldn't mind devoting some of it doing some non-profit work for a good cause.

But I don't really know what kind of work I could do... for example I know I wouldn't be really suited for taking care of the old/ill persons.

do you do any kind of non profit work in some non-profit organisations?
if yes, what's what you do?

my mother donates her time when she can to various local organizations, not sure which but one is for homeless and the other is for orphans.

my wife and I both want to take 6-12 months off when we're older and join the peace corps going to 3rd world countries, etc.

I spend my volunteer time with animal rescues, and domestic violence/sexual assault shelters and hotlines.

Find something you're passionate about, and then figure how to turn it into service.

My wife and I have been trying to find / decide on a charity to volunteer at as well. Haven't decided on one yet but there are so many out there, so many people less fortunate who can use your help. :-)

Try to spend time in an orphanage. Just talking to those children will make you feel good.
