Importance of domain extension opinion?

i'd say it depends...
If you are trying to brand a site - you should get all available tlds.
If it's about the SEO - the com is enough.

It depends what your goals are.

If you want to create a brand and have people remember your site than .com is the way to go. .net is brandable, but it takes a lot more time and effort. The rest are pretty much keyword only.

A .com made up word is more brandable than a keyword in any other extension. Can you think of any big brand with an extension other than .com?

If your going after search engine traffic than any domain extension will work. Keep in mind that certain country specific domains will get higher/lower placement depending on what country the surfer is searching in. .co.uk dominate google rankings in UK but don't show up so well when you are searching from USA.

For example www.femdomsociety.co.uk/ is #9 in google for 'femdom' when I search with a UK ip address but doesn't crack the top 50 from usa.

.com also has the most resale value.

.de is the 2nd most popular registered extension behind .com.

There is a reason there are 3x as many .com's registered than .net, .org, .info, .biz and .us combined.
