Fuck The Sopranos, Fuck Entourage, Fuck The Shield, Fuck Rome, Fuck 24...
The Wire is the best show ever. One season of the wire and those second-tier shows will be ruined to you forever. Nuff said.

Yeah... The Wire beats those others out, imho.... and I, for one, don't think it went downhill at all.
And I'm pissed about Deadwood, too - though I heard they'll have a few more episodes to wrap the series up in a few months. Hope that's more than just rumor.

From my understanding some countries are a few seasons behind. I felt a downgrade with season three.

The wire sucks, just drive to baltimore if u wanna see the real thing & way worse. Just don't try to take that tour at night without a 12-gauge in your front seat, or some $ so u can buy em away from your car.
Same thing with the soprano's....take a ride into any major "little italy" on the east coast, you can hear a bunch of foul mouthed Italians acting tough. The shield....pfffft, the real cops in L.A. are way more corrupt & way tougher. Now whats this shit talk on entourage? Entourage is fantastic.

Entourage is a great show. I didnt mean to diss it at all, just trying to make my point that the wire is better. Comparing Entourage to The Wire is like comparing a hamburger to a steak.

Defintely, and thats what makes it so great but also what takes away from its popularity. A lot of people dont have the patience for a long, complex story like that.

Simon was born in Washington, D.C., graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, and then worked as a police reporter at The Baltimore Sun from 1984 to 1988.
He paused to write the 1991 book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, which described his life traveling with members of the Baltimore Police Department. The book won the 1992 Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime book, and became the basis for the award-winning TV series Homicide: Life on the Street (1993-1999), on which Simon worked as a writer and producer. Simon won the WGA Award for Best Writing in a Drama, and the Humanitas Prize in the same category. In 1997 he co-authored, with Ed Burns, The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood, the true account of a West Baltimore community dominated by a heavy drug market. It was named a Notable Book of the Year by The New York Times. Simon then co-wrote and produced The Corner as a six-hour TV miniseries for HBO. The show received three Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries or a Movie, for Simon and David Mills. Currently he serves as the creator, executive producer, and head writer of the HBO drama series The Wire, many of whose characters and incidents also come from Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets. After a critically acclaimed fourth season, Simon has signed on to produce a fifth and final season of The Wire which will focus on the role of mass media in society. Simon is also producing and writing an adaptation of Generation Kill for HBO with Ed Burns. Simon left The Baltimore Sun in 1995 and continues to work as a freelance journalist and author, writing for The Washington Post, The New Republic, and Details magazine. |

There is this one scene during one of the first episodes in season one when they make a subliminal comparison between the drug game and chess. That?s when I first noticed how masterful this show really is.

The first 3 seasons of the Wire was on par with any top show. Prison Break and 24 included.
Last season, ehh, not so much.

I see movie stars all the time in L.A. and I still dig Entourage. It's a great show. But it's also a popcorn flick. I'm sure Mark Wahlburg would agree. Maybe its the best damn popcorn flick in the history of television, but it's still a popcorn flick. The Wire is probably the most intelligent television I've ever seen. It's not just about the plot, the characters, or the setting. The show's urban poetry and mythology. It's art, in my opinion, and transcends the reality of what might be going down on your local corner.

Exactly, and it's so cool when you realize he's talking about them. And Bodie says "Not if they're some smart ass pawns." That clearly says a lot about the characters.

ABSOLUTELY AGREE!
I looked at the thread title and saw the multiple HBO shows being trampled - and the first thing that came to my mind was The Wire. Maybe he's saying fuck these shows because for as long as The Wire exists, television sucks. Poof, open the fucking thread - The wire appreciation. Good, son! The dynamic duo. Miss them together, Avon is back for Season 5 though. ![]() Omar, albeit my favorite character amongst an amazing ensemble, will prob die in it's last season. |

Anyone who complains there's nothing good on TV anymore isn't really looking
Agreed, the wire is amazing as are the other programs you mentioned, but the best of them all: Dexter Isn't is funny that some of the best television shows are coming from premium and pay cable? FX has the Shield, Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me HBO has Entourage, Big Love, Sopranos, Deadwood and though it had shitty ratings, I really got a kick out of Lucky Louie Showtime has Dexter, Weeds, Penn And Teller's Bullshit and The L Word

pr0 - I'm from Jersey City NJ, this shit is as close as it comes for me.
Red tops, red tops. I love the show, it's a sophisticated depiction of the modern day urban environment with superior writing - the Hamsterdam parallel, unfuckingbelievable- But hey, it's offensive right, you're "ghetto" and it's not fun. Although I credit you for not glamorizing the ghetto, as it's obviously nowhere anyone would want to be - UNLESS if watching at HOME. Of which The Wire provides. Crime Drama. Easy, no frills or gunshot entertainment, it's a tv show, and thus we're allowed to partake in this experience regardless of background. It just so happens I can relate closely, and I have had relatives fall to the same shit they sell - but I can separate my "own" emotions, or my own trepidation for what is the monster known as 'the ghetto' --- from great television experience/writing. I can also see how regardless if you relate on my level, or be it 67 yr old Thelma from a suburban neighborhood her whole life, I think we can all find ourselves a bit intrigued at the inner workings of the modern day Costa nostra to a much less organized, vicious, no-family extent. ALONGSIDE damn ol' natural po-leece work. To a much further extent, superseding my word - just look at criminals, the dealers. Who actually take what they they watch the show and use on the streets. P.s. Single family homes in the 200's do not count. We're talking tenement buildings, section-8 with the government cheese incld. So beware you go biting off more than you can chew taking the "moral highground", presuming you're GFY's resident Urban advisor and everyone will follow lead as they cannot protest if not from - "Ahh yes, I agree, it's exploitation"- listen Al Sharpton, it's fucking entertaining. Very simple. |

After the godfather was filmed....the local soldiers started emulating the movie. Now if 40yo italians started kissing rings after a movie was made. Imagine the impact on 18yo black kids in baltimore. It legitimizes the game....even glorifies it. One day when we're all living in a gated community, with 24-7 security carrying sub machine guns.....we're gonna sit back & say, wtf did we do, is this latin america, africa? I tell ya what we did....we glorified the game. And a whole 30%+ of the population will be playing it. Just my ![]() |
