American Sheeple: Support For 1st Amendment Slipping

Support For 1st Amendment Slipping

(AP) Support for the First Amendment has eroded significantly since Sept. 11 and nearly half of Americans now think the constitutional amendment on free speech goes too far in the rights it guarantees, according to a new poll.

The sentiment that the First Amendment goes too far was already on the rise before the terrorist attacks a year ago, doubling to four in 10 between 2000 and 2001.

The poll released Thursday found that 49 percent think the First Amendment goes too far, a total about 10 points higher than in 2001.

"Many Americans view these fundamental freedoms as possible obstacles in the war on terrorism," said Ken Paulson, executive director of the First Amendment Center, based in Arlington, Va., which commissioned the survey.

Another quote from the article:

Seven in 10 respondents agreed newspapers should publish freely, a slight drop from 2001. Those less likely to support newspaper rights included people without a college education, Republicans, and evangelicals, the survey found.

What about the other 3 in 10? They want the government to censor newspapers?

What about the other 3 in 10?...

Maybe they think the papers etc should tell the TRUTH and be held to that or face legal proceedings.

I would be amazed if 3 out of 10 Americans knew what the 1st Amendment was. Let alone able to give a valid opinion about it.

Valid point. I wonder if they asked them if they knew what it was before they asked if it "went too far".

You can get an American to agree to anything you want him to if you phrase the question properly.

A perfect case in point was when the Man Show put up a booth that wanted women to sign a petition to end Womens Sufferage.

Lots of women signed it.

Womens Sufferage was the movement that worked for womens rights at the turn of the century.

Uhh, the same could be said for any person, anywhere.

Please stop with your retarded, attention whore stereotypes?

And anyone who believes these bullshit serveys is a fucking lemming retard, the results were probably tabulated using a bunch of 90 year old women when asked about their feelings on rap music.

Yes I was asking you to stop, rather then telling you, because I wouldn't want to further any more of the 'typical, self centered, pushy' American bullshit now would I?

In the 60s, high school students handed out "petitions" in malls and urban areas with the Bill of Rights as the subject, reworded only slightly. Less than half the people recognized them for what they were, and a good percentage of people thoght the petition was "some kind of communist propaganda." This is really nothing new.

In a Soc class I had, I took a speach by Jesse Jackson about Civil Rights and changed every instance of African American to European American.

It was universally denounced as the work of a hate monger.

On a Phil Donahue show years ago. Phil read a prayer that had been written during the Second World War. The prayer was about asking God's help to defeat the enemy in battle. It was a well prepared and moving prayer.

Phil then asked the audience who they thought wrote the prayer. There was a variety of answers, most of which were the big political players among the Allied Countries, or the well known Generals among the Allied Forces.

According to Phil, Hitler wrote the prayer.

ahaha classic. Donahue loves to stir up shit. I watch his show on MSNBC nightly. He is waaay to far on the left for me but I love his style. He is quick whitted.

I could post some quotes about getting back to nature and the benefits of being a Vegan that you would think were written by a dirty hippy.

But were written by Hitler.
