Do you really believe that the quality of playing on the top 40 albums today is the same level of playing as you found 10 20 or 30 years ago. I think that one of the main reasons for this is the obvious transition from radio to video - the singer and the personallity has taken over from the musician and the technique or talent. Really really good playing - awe inspiring, spine chilling guitar work - has disappeared from popular music, but I do believe that people want to hear it. Great music will always survive - In Toronto here, Bruce Springsteen tickets sold out in 30 minutes - no advertising campaign, nothing on mtv about it - just good music getting the respect it deserves. |
Captain,
I can't stand Bruce Springsteen. I find nothing redeeming about his music whatsoever. This is just personal taste though. Nothing more, nothing less. I wouldn't say the guy lacks in musical ability, just that it doesn't speak to me and I don't like the music at all. I don't relate to him, his life, where he comes from or anything like it. So what? You like him. I don't. Nothing deeper than that. i CERTAINLY don't see anything deep about Springsteen lyrics that don't exist in, say, Eminem's. Streets of Philadelphia. Not exactly 8 part composition. When it comes to musical ability many classical and jazz musicians would say rock is pop-art. Not even worthy of consideration. Should we buy into that? Your choice. All *I'M* saying is people love to say the music they listen to is great and other people's music is "not even music". My grandfather said it about my father's music. My dad said it about mine. 'Round and 'round she goes. |
The MTV Music Awards. It's Shit, it sells, and we keep watching. :1orglaugh

I am trying to figure out what the FUCK has happened to fashion this season. Or good taste even.
Did you see what some of those chicks were wearing? Looked like ugly sacks out of the 80's, and Britney needs a new stylist in a big way. Horrible. They all try to look like porn stars. The entertainment industry is one huge blur to me now. Even Axl rose had cargo style pockets on his fucking leathers. What the fuck? |

Damn, after I heard about what Christina A. wore, I took a look around and couldn't find shit. Christ, I went to mtv.com and hit a link that looked like it might show something and got Jennifer Lopez. Blech.
Someone post a pic please. Boring around here, I need something good to snap one off to. |

Thanx Colin.
Somewhat dissapointing, but it'll get the job done. :D |

now that most of the world wont buy a cd but just download and burn it, the music industry is will go back to people that make music....for the love of music. |
The guy with the bucket on his head is Buckethead.... and he's a killer guitarist... don't know what the fuck he's doing with GNR though....
as far as me watching MTV.... I don't, and yes, they do suck. I virtually never watch tv, but with all the talk of the wild freak show shit about it here on the board, I just had to see it for myself. Yes, Michael Jackson is the Freak King.... someone kill that thing! It scares me mommy! Springsteen shoulda stayed gone. I never liked his shit before and I like it even less now. Maybe Shakira CAN sing, I don't know... I never heard one of her studio tracks, and I'm guessing last night probably wasn't a good example of her stuff, so I'll cut her some slack for now.... |
Yes, controversy + music is a huge success formula. Eminem knows it and so do we. Yesterday's controveries don't seem so now but they sure were then.
Yes, Eminem writes about violence to sell more CDs. Yes, Ozzy Osbourne pissed on the Alamo and bit the head off a live bat. Yes, Mick Jagger and Keith Richard's were once considered the bad boys of Rock-n-Roll because they wrote songs about drug use and sex. In 1966, John Lennon said "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue with that; I'm right and I will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first - rock 'n' roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me." Publicity stunt? Sure! I think Elvis was just swinging his hips to sell more albums. That, apparently, was more controversial in his day than Eminem's lyrics today. Didn't Elvis' management pay teen girls in the audience to cry? |
Publicity works... of course, Colin.... my problem with eminem is that he's extremely BAD at it.... he's not convincing.... he's not *tough*.... he's not *bad*... he's a fuckin' punk fuckstick.... he actually looked rattled for real by Moby when he was doing the "I WILL hit a man with glasses" bit...... which tells me he takes himself far too seriously and probably believes his own bullshit.... and that's a perfect formula for a hard downfall.
He's a fuckin' punk ass kid that wants desperately to be black. If it wasn't for Dr. Dre, he would STILL be nobody today. Why Dre ever chose to take that idiot under his wing, I'll never know.... I don;t give a shit about rap enough to go looking for that answer. I will say that his tunes do have a certain kind of a cool sound to them, but ya know..... that ain't eminem... he ain't unique or fuckin' special.. studio technology can make pretty much anyone sound like a fuckin' god nowdays.... same as we can Photoshop ugly people into pornstars.... |

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Dre cashed in. |
Captain Canada, you have the "good ol'days" syndrome.
Check billboard Top40 for 15,20 years ago and you will realize that it sucked just as bad as it does now. What you remember are the good bands/artist that YOU listened to because you made the effort to find them. And its still just like that, Commercial Crap is just that, crap, but the REAL band/artist are out there... you just need to dig a little... Gaffer Planes Mistaken for Stars Small Brown Bike |
