Video PRO's member section videos...what size, what rates, what format?

    Hi,

we just got a load of new raw video material and we're figuring out the
best way to edit/encode it for the membersections of our paysites.

Please shed a light on the following questions and why you think those
are the best answers to do it that way.

    What size h x w?
    What frame rates?
    What file format?
    What compression ratio?
Any other usefull things to consider?

    Thanks for your input

depends on what your raw format is ...

I use diffentent combinations .. mostly when dealing with HD, HDV and DVCpro .. for web .. For raw DVcam (minidv) presets seem to be fine

I'm far from a pro but for the sake of contributing, here's my set up:

        Format: MPG1
        Size: 720 x 480
        Bit Rate: 2000
        Frame Rate: 29.97

I do this using tmpgenc. I also have the videos de-interlaced while it renders.

        Hope that helps a bit...

so just 1 format, not 2 or 3 different speeds? I'm thinking of a lower framerate
as the people jerking off won't see the difference between 30 or 20 frames
a second....which reduces the size considerably.

What about flv format? That will make your content a bit harder to just
leech with a site slurp download manager?

Thanks for the replies so far....I know what most people use but since I'm
working on new sites and new content I'm thinking if perhaps I should do
things slightly different.....because of todays issues with torrent sites
and such flash video is perhaps a bit easier to protect.....or at least slightly
harder to rip than other formats you can just download.

          I appreciate your input.....thanks

because I want to know the reasoning behind doing it a certain way.....
I don't like todo something just because others do it.....there's already
                too many of those

I do a lot of video encoding mostly from hdv nowadays and I never feel that it is worth messing with the frame rates just to save some file size. I leave it at 29.97 or 30 fps. I'd' rather lower the frame size and video and audio bitrates for the lower quality versions of clips.

I used to mostly make 320x240 and 640x480 mpeg-1 and wmv clips from standard definition videos, but nowadays for widescreen wmv and quicktime and possibly flash clips I make a smallish version at 480x270 up to 1280x720 or even full size 1920x1080 for those that want very hi-res files.

Also don't forget if you are filming hdv with an interlaced camera you have to de-interlace the clips on capture or in the encoding process to best display them on computer monitors.

thanks a lot this makes sense.....we don't shoot ourselfes but buy...most
of it is HD we get both encoded and raw material. since now there's so much
content theft and torrent sites...I'm contemplating of just doing everything
in flash video format as that's a bit harder to rip and steal.

I know it's still possible.....but at least it's not a simple as just downloading
                    the files...

Does anyone else just use flash format and no mpeg-1, wmv, or whatever
                    other downloadable format?

If yes...do you get a lot of complaints from the members? Or do you perhaps
sell other formats as an upsale?

                    Thanks guys....

Do Flash. A few major programs are offering that now.

Make sure you offer the 2 screen sizes you usually see with flash video and you are golden.

For flash encoding use Flix encoder. www.on2.com

They created the Flash 8 codec and absolutely make the best encoder available.
I've trusted my sites to them for over a decade...

i would do wmv's in the max quality and res you have, and another version wmv's which are like 320x

So basicly you will have low and high quality
if you want to make it perfect you can offer and medium quality

If you have a large quantity of raw videos that need encoded, we provide professional grade encoding service at a very reasonable price with fast turn-around. We'll also provide screen captures and arrange the file naming structures exactly the way you would like it. Saving you lots of time and effort. We specialize in flash flv encoding using On2 VP6 Pro codec, currently the best choice for streaming flash movies.

If you are concerned with security, our partner company mediaconductor.com can provide you with the most versatile flash streaming hosting service including piracy protections.

Please contact me if you have any question. Thank you and Good Luck!
