Piratebay launches BayIMG

Not everyone has access to an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server with a near endless supply of bandwidth. When sharing pictures online, those without the benefit of an FTP server resort to using services such as ImageShack. This image hosting service is typically used to host forum avatars, family pictures, and other graphics.

However there are limitations to this service. Primarily, the alloted upload size is 1.5 megabytes. Additionally, the only file formats permitted is jpg, jpeg, png, gif, bmp, tif, tiff and swf. Granted this is a very generous service, especially considering it's free. Yet just when you thought the waters were safe from buccaneers, along comes The Pirate Bay.

Looking to one-up ImageShack, a new side project from some of the folks at The Pirate Bay has gone live. Their project is an image hosting site called BayIMG. Although similar to ImageShack, there's a few noteworthy differences.

Perhaps the most significant difference is the 100 megabyte file limitation. In these days of high definition cameras, where images are often larger than 1.5 megabytes, many will see this as the most welcoming change. Additionally, there's virtually no file format limitation. BayIMG has support for approximately 140 different file formats, including support for ZIP and RAR archives.

"You can upload about 140 different formats", BayIMG reads. "There's even support for .RAR and .ZIP-archives! If you upload an archive with multiple images, you'll also get an album-address for all the pictures inside of it. Tags are separated by spaces, removal code is a password to let you remove images you upload."

Like most things that deal with The Pirate Bay, the rules and regulations governing uploaded files are at best relaxed. Copyright issues are not addressed, although a vague reference to "legal" files is mentioned on the home page.

"Bayimg.com is a place where you can host all your images. We do not censor them. We believe in freedom of speech, it's of utter importance to us. As long as your pictures are legal they will be hosted here, but we reserve the right to remove images due to technical reasons though. If something crashes here, you better have a backup yourself - hopefully that won't happen. Usually we know what we're doing."

Bandwidth limitations are not addressed on the FAQ section, however they too are most likely very relaxed. Does ImageShack have a serious competitor looming? If The Pirate Bay can turn the mighty copyright industry upside down, the next few months may prove interesting.

BayIMG's tag line is pretty in your face: NO COPYRIGHT. NO LICENSE.

If you visit the tag cloud (http://bayimg.com/cloud) you'll notice that currently their most popular tag is "REBEL".
http://bayimg.com/tag/rebel
That's a whole lot of Rebel right there...

I dunno.. they've already been pushed pretty hard. The movie and music industry has been doing everything in their power to blow Pirate Bay out of existance, without success. If they get shutdown, they just move to a different country.

They are going to have a hard time arguing their case in court over this one. The swedish copyright laws have protected them (The Pirate Bay) as long as they didn't host the actual content, but this is going a step too far.

I think that the swedish authorities need to wake up and smell the CP. "open" file trading means that CP is traded as easily as anything else. Piratebay appears to get more and more CP on it every day new and fresh.

Sweden should be ashamed to be a haven for this shit.

Those are some smart guys! BayIMG could be YOUR service, but your to stupid and poor to build something like this. No iam not supporting the bayguys at all, but its just plain stupid to do nothing else, then crying all day long how bad torrents are. Come up with them, reach their level, make the big bucks like they do and open your mouth again.
Not trying to piss on someones legs, so take it as my statement and nothing else...
Again, i dont support torrents, but those are definatly some smartasses behind the doors..

to be honest this isn't a huge suprise. all someone at piratebay has to do is login to gfy to see the industry is not addressing copyright theft, even on the most basic level.

When huge sponsors like playboy complete ignore the issue publicly, people are bound to figure its a great area to exploit. When they actively promote the sponsors who's affiliates are giving away stolen material, its even more of an incentive..

I'm sure they're stockpiling much of the cash they're making now so that in the event that they someday get shutdown, they'll have no financial worries.

Maybe instead of fighting to shut things like this down, we need to figure out how to monetize the traffic. The music industry has been fighting this battle since day one and look where they got (suing the end users). In todays world I don't think that anyone is ever going to be able to stop this kind of thing. So if you can't beat them, I guess we may as well learn how to work with them and all share a piece of the pie.

all these years in adult have taught me one thing:

CRIME PAYS!

he who has the most morals loses. almost every time. your biggest competition will always be a bunch of immoral pricks who will fuck you in the time it takes to say "here, this drink is on me"

you won't have an easy time proving me wrong.

there are tons of old timers around who were doing things that others swore would put them in jail.. from hardcore spam to billing scams or whatever... they're still here and more often than not, they made a lot of money doing what they did.

You can rest assured that the dating mob will be jumping all over this one.

Now the music, software and porn content sharing sites using upload services will enjoy the benefit of not having their upload links deleted after a few days. There will be huge increase in spanned rar and zip distribution if this service keeps active.
Even though it often takes some time, Rapidshare and the like delete material violating TOS. I doubt Piratebay will even have a TOS for copyright and porn content. An upload service run by a bunch of irresponsible leachers, that?s scary.

I have websites with produced content if they are giving that away, then there isnt much for me to do. Cant sell something their giving away. The music industry isnt winning because there are certain places they wont go that would be able to but it wont happen. There are no true leaders in our industry, if I had the money I would be leading the charge and putting pressure on my high level peers to come along.

We will not remove any pictures that are just immoral or in any way legal to host under Swedish law.

That means just about anything goes.

This will turn out to be one big shit pile.
