China: Doctors performing open-chest surgery on a 10-month-old girl with unexplained breathing difficulties have been surprised by a piece of grass they found growing there. The child is said to be recovering now that the problem has been removed.
The infant was initially diagnosed as having pneumonia. When she didn't respond to treatment she was taken to another hospital where a diagnosis of pyopneumothorax was put forward but again the little girl failed to respond to treatment.
Doctors theorise that the baby may have inhaled a seed which started to grow. "We were surprised to find a 3cm piece of grass growing on the baby?s right lung," said chief surgeon Li Qun.
