Look in XPs help section for peer to peer etc and see what it has to say about connecting to win98.

Does XP have the Home Networking wizard the same as WinME? Can you get a copy of the Home Networking wizard disc that WinME makes for pc's that don't already have it installed?

Fuck direct cable connections it is pure bullshit between different OS's. I went nuts a few weeks ago trying to get one to work. Tried everything, every tutorial online that had all kinds of technical details and patches etc and after 3 full days of trying...nothing. Total waste of time.

I bought an 80gig usb/firewire external drive, and did it all that way.

two lan cards and a cross over cable should be all you need just make sure that when you set up the lan cards that you make both computer part of the same group "WORKGROUP" is an example and easy to remember then once you do that you should be able to see both computer by clicking on network neighborhood icon. if you see both computer names then you need to open explorer and right click on the drives to set shareing so you can read write from one computer to the other.
if you want both computers to access the net via on connection use internet net connect sharing it works for me using satelite connection
