Ok all you hotshot photographers... in here
Wifey wants a new camera to take pics of the kids and all that crap...
So looking for recommendations, on a nice quality family digital cam for the buck. Nothing too expensive please, itll probably spend most of its time in the closet after the first month lol.. And not too incredibly large, although doesnt have to be small, just dont want it to be a hassle when we go out.. Fire away and Thanks

Canon has a nice array of very affordable point and shoot digital cameras, and if you don't mind spending $450, you can get a very decent quality Rebel XT, 8 megapixel camera through B and H Photo and Video, and you don't have to pay for sales tax (unless you are in NY).

The latest Sony Ericsson K850i phone has a 5MP camera with true flash and 30fps video recording. It's not quite there yet in terms of quality, but it won't be long before there's some serious competition against a separate point&shoot camera.
The downside is that it's unlikely they'll be able to squeeze comparable optical zoom into a phone, or if they do it will be very limited. |

Sony has a long way to go before their cameras are worth a fart in water. If cute design is what matters and you don't mind shitty picture quality, then Sony is right for you. And that is when picture conditions are perfect. In less than perfect conditions (about 92% of the time), Sony is beyond crappy.

I see now, the aperature on that one i post is higher, not a 2.8 i'd probably want.... that will let me get those cool in close pictures with the
background faded out.. Also this camera obviously no dial, touch screen which seems cool but in the long wrong wastes alot of time fidgeting around... The plus side is the 3" screen, i very much like the w90 now, (i guess a step up from the w80 posted above) but has smaller screen, and no slide on/off feature, that lens kinda pops out... Know what i want now, just more confused

Ok, question about SLR if I might ask...
Ok SLR is hinged mirrors or whatever, so it allows you to see what the lens is actually looking at, this allows you to see what exactly is being captured by the film or digital data system.. Seems cool n all, but I was reading that article above and it says that I NEED A SLR camera to capture moments say like kids playing sports or in plays etc. Wtf does mirrors have to do with motion captures? Wouldnt that have to do with stability and shutter speeds?

why SLR ? they are kinda bulky to log around and typically not very practical.
if just candids i would just get a casio point and shoot like the exlim, it has very little lag time.. and it fits in a shirt pocket or purse. |

If you read his article, you'll know what I mean. His approach to women seems to be: They don't understand anything except how to clean the kitchen. Or, try this article on for size: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/digi...-my-tripod.htm At the end of the day, I think a compact would be great for your wife. Nikon, Sony and Casio make great compact models. They're easy to slip into the purse or pocket, and contrary to what the URL above said - they actually will take *better* photos off the bat than a DSRL, simply because they automagically tweak colour, contrast, balance, etc, which a DSLR won't do automatically. |
