Believe it or not....I actually dated a chic whos family had a pseudo slave back in 1986. His name was Henry...
The story goes like so... Her dad ran a small local grocery store...The young Henry would come by every day pulling his little red wagon. Her dad starting offering him little jobs for a few bucks....Eventually her dad got to know Henry's Mom who lived in the projects with several other children.....I don't know the what fors of the situation, but somehow she turned the little boy over to Mr Parks to raise. From that point forward, Henry lived with the Parks family and did household chores and what not...When I dated her in bout 1986 he was around 30 years old I guess. They didn't pay him wages but treated him very nice. He had a little house in the back yard he lived in. I remember the xmas they bought him a VCR, he was SO proud of it. He couldn't read/write but was a really nice guy....Its was a strange situation to me to say the least. I mean he wasnt' a slave, but where could he go, what could he do? He knew nothing but serving the Parks family for basically room and board. BTW...I dont' condone Mr. Parks actions or approve of what happend to Henry, just thought i'd share.... |
