Shanksville PA where flight 93 crashed
So cnn has done a story on this. The slant of the story is that basically people want the private owner of the land to either donate it, or accept their low offer to buy it.
Why should this man not make a good sale on his privately owned land that just happened to have a plane crash on it in a horrible tragedy? Government money that was paying for security ran out months ago, and this man pays out of his own pocket $10,000 a month for security. So he put up a donation box, which the national park service covered with a trash bag yesterday because THEY felt it was undignified. This story irks me and I'd like to know where people stand on it. Mind you, there is a 58 million dollar memorial already planned to go on the land IF and WHEN he decides to sell it. The offer was made to pay him half of 1 million for his land, which he rejected.

I saw the story, he's not selling the crash site... just the surrounding land (he owns 270+ acres already) He wants fair market value

Trying to disctract everyone from the fact that the plane was shot down. It's so pathetic. They should just pay the guy.

It seems that everytime there is something I would NOT mind my federal tax money to go to buy (the land), they just want to screw someone.
This guy doesnt have to pay a private security firm to keep people off the land, but the government pulled the grant money so he feels he has to, and should out of respect. And now the only government people involved (national park service rangers) decide on their own, that there should not be a donation box. Well fuck you! Pay him $10k a month yourself then. Jesus. I just think he should get what the land is worth, and get paid for his out of pocket expenses too frankly. Get it over with, dont vilify this guy because he happens to own the land.

They will probably find some scumbag to put a strip mall up and use eminent domain to steal the land from him.

Ages ago somebody approached my grandparent's coal mine in another part of PA and asked them to donate some coal to make a memorial. They agreed but haven't heard anything since then.
