ASACP Asks: "Have You Labeled With RTA Today?"

Los Angeles, CA (June 4, 2007) - The Association of Sites Advocating Child
Protection (ASACP) has declared today "Label With RTA" Day.

ASACP urges all adult sites that have not yet adopted its RTA ("Restricted
to Adults") website label to do so. The organization also asks supporters to
help spread the word to other companies and webmasters. Adult pay sites can contact their affiliates and encourage them to use the tag, while companies that provide billing, hosting, design and other services can make the same pitch to their clients. ASACP can even provide a sample email that can be sent to affiliates.

There is already legislation pending in Congress that requires mandatory
labeling by adult websites, but publicly demonstrating that the adult
industry is capable of self-regulation can head that off. The RTA label
offers a chance for adult sites to do just that. Plus, while a new law would
only affect companies in the United States, the RTA label is already being
    adopted internationally.

The RTA label has been endorsed by major adult companies, industry attorneys
and the Free Speech Coalition. The tag has also been incorporated by
numerous parental filtering products and services. These include
CleanInternet.com, ContentProtect, CSWeb, Cyber Sentinel, FamiLink,
FilterGate, iShield, Kidsnet (and all of BluePrint Data's other Internet
Filtering products), Net Nanny, Netsweeper, ParentalControl Bar,
    ScreenShield and SurfSafely.com.

Complete information about the RTA label and how to use it is available at
    www.RTAlabel.org.

Founded in 1996, the Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection
(ASACP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating child
pornography from the Internet. ASACP also works to help parents prevent
children from viewing age-inappropriate material online. More information is
    available at www.asacp.org.

My xbiz blog on this issue in looking at it from a different angle then just "child protection": http://www.xbiz.com/blogs/blog.php?catid=59#23380

ASACP create the Restriced to Adults ("RTA") label for websites as a response to congressional pressure on the Adult Industry to self-regulate, or "they will do it for you," was the message coming back from the Senate Judiciary Committee Paul Cambria testified at.

The RTA label looks like this: <meta name="RATING" content="RTA-5042-1996-1400-1577-RTA">

It is to be placed in the HEAD section of every page.

With the use of technology, the web page could be blocked from viewing. This would mean an individual who chooses not to want to see porn for themselves or for a child, can do so. People who want to block porn are not porn consumers.

The long standing filtering mechanism has been ICRA, who has recently changed their name to Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), where they require you to register your domains and your email address with them.

Besides all the various reasons to label your websites with RTA, there is one that I will focus on here.

If you don't label, it's like not voting. Someone else will decide your fate.

There are bills now introduced in Congress that mandate labeling, and while they have not specific mentioned ICRA, it can be safe to assume that ICRA has its lobbying efforts on high.

You might be thinking, if its a law to label and ICRA is the selected filter, what's the big deal? I'll just label with ICRA.

The difference is that you could have a chance to determine what YOU, as a member of the adult industry, feel is appropriate technology to accomplish the filtering goals. That YOU can decide the solution based upon industry friendly implementation.

If you don't "vote" to label with RTA, then you'll let others (ie. Congress and lobbyists) do the "voting" for you.

The RTA label was created by the industry, for the industry. Learn more at rtalabel.org

Labeling with RTA is the right thing to do; it's easy, free, protects children and demonstrates that the online adult industry is capable of proactive measures that help ensure our future.

              A shout out to Australia:

Due to the efforts of Robbie Swan, Fiona Patten, EROS Association, the following sites have labeled with RTA:

              Rolf, Tangent Design
              Karl, Loversshop
              Susie, Body Bitz, Sexbay

I've been slowly adding RTA and "SafeLabeling" to all my sites.. They're FAR easier to do than the ICRA one.

It is a wonderful idea. When the sponsors start requiring that all pages are marked like this to be part of thier programs, then you will see a major shift. It would be to RTA's advantage to be addressing themselves to the programs and asking them to help push this idea solidly.

i'll post up here for others who wondering the same:

ICRA is a labeling method created by an organization that is now called 'Family Online Safety Institute'... which has supporters that are of an anti-porn nature.

The RTA label was created by ASACP, an organization funded by lots of adult program names you know, which has the mission of looking out for adult biz (asacp member's) interest on child protection issues.

Wouldn't you want to support and industry solution rather than an external one?

There are software vendors who have included the RTA label for filtering, and like the chicken-and-egg story, there does need to be a wider level of adoption of the RTA label for outside industry people to take notice.

If industry business owners don't "self-regulate" (and i hate that term) and add on filtering labels, congress has already promised it would do so... backed by some bills floating up on congress to make labelling mandatory.

The new bills in congress mention every page.. and for good reason.. search engines and direct links bypass the front door, and having a label on every page, means whatever blocking software is in place will have the clue to know what to block.

I have RTA label on one of my sites and i'll have it on the rest by the weekend.

It's a good move and I encourage others to do it.

                                              Thank you for labeling.

When we go to DC to encourage them not to make labeling mandatory, we need to provide stats demonstrating that the industry can self-regulate.

The more sites that label, the stronger position we are in.

                                              We need your help.

                                                conversation from icq:

                                                zzzzz (03:34 PM) :
got a question for you about rta. isnt this similar to xxx. well ok not competely similar, but lets say web sites all do this, then isp's go hey, we can block all adult sites because we want to and block any site with meta tag blah blah.. while its a good idea to to lable stuff, this sort of puts us in that ability for ghettoizing our sites for bad or good

                                                FightThePatent (03:35 PM) :
ISp can't block by a tag.. unless they offer a proxy service.. which some alrady do anyways using blacklists..

                                                FightThePatent (03:35 PM) :
.XXX can be blocked at the DNS lookup level..

                                                zzzzz (03:35 PM) :
yea, i know the tech side of things, im just saying..

                                                zzzzz (03:35 PM) :
any host or big company comcast, etc run though proxy and caching systems

                                                FightThePatent (03:36 PM) :
blocking is always possible.. but consumers want porn.. so i really don't believe an ISP would block all porn... doesn't make business sense

                                                zzzz (03:36 PM) :
all somone needs to do is build a spider that searchs for this tag, sells his list to isp's and boom we are all of a sudden blocked over night

                                                FightThePatent (03:36 PM) :
makes more sense to offer a servce to filter it that costs more

                                                zzzzz (03:36 PM) :
or for that instance sells this list to the gov

There are already blacklists out there for blocking pornn sites. There are spiders and human reviewers creating these lists, and verifying them already for years.

Do you realize that if the U.S. government has their way, labeling will be mandatory (with their label) and there will be a fine for websites owners who don't label?

We need to prevent this from happening: Label with RTA today!

It would help the movement tremendously if someone pasted an easy to use script that webmasters could PASTE into their SSH window to update all .html files w/ the code

I also wrote the instructions for modifying apache if there are any questions about that. I've set up apache on a couple of systems so that it adds the RTA label automatically to the http headers.
