If you're not comfortable with Ubuntu's interface, you can try Kubuntu which looks more like Windows.
The only thing that's stopping me right now from switching completely is WINE, but it's getting pretty good recently, I bet in a few months we will be able to run Photoshop CS2 out of the box. Just give it some time

Lol you act like Wine just came out or something wtf... I wont tell you how long , but its been in development since the early to mid 90's...

facialfreak 06-02-2007 06:13 PM

I just installed (portable) Illustrator CS2 -- and it works fine!

facialfreak 06-02-2007 06:17 PM

IE6 SP1 is another app worth loading in WINE, so you can see how webpages will render to the 75% of the world who don't know any better (plus Steve Balmer's children who are not allowed to use Firefox, or own an iPod ...) :Oh crap

The only thing I still use windows for is video editing ... Linux still has a bit to go in this area IMHO :winkwink:

This is EXACTLY why linux is gaining ground every day!! :winkwink:

Chef86 06-02-2007 07:52 PM

http://pcbsd.org/

there is one other package of this out there somewhere (desktopbsd?) -- neither worked well on one of my spare boxes but Ubuntu jammed on it...so debian linux it is

and the bsd community makes gfy look like a bunch of fucking free loving hippies...they're so fast to tell you to fuck off and RTFM it'll make your head spin...whereas the Ubuntu crowd respects the medication regimine that their doctors prescribed and are much more palatable in a social/helpful sense...

Google how to make your Photoshop CS2 "portable" (as if going to put it on a USB key) ...

Portable CS2 installs via WINE effortlessly and works perfectly!

I've been using CS2 as well as Dreamweaver 8 in Ubuntu for months now :thumbsup

dammit, now I'm going to spend another hour or two tomorrow trying to get this done on my Feisty box ;P

It is rather easy .... I am on UbuntuStudio (Feisty) but I installed it while I was still using Edgy

Every program that I use on a daily basis, except one - (Advance Submitter), I have running on Linux. No way in hell am I ever switching my main machine back to Windows.

Linux chicks make me horny ... :winkwink:

Thanks maing...but I'm more interested in the DW issue -- I don't use PS really -- I'm not much of a graphics guy and for what I need I use Gimp or PSP...

DW however I use at least a few times a day.

Damn, its been years since I've used a linux distro on a main comp in a dual/multi boot setup. Maybe I'll toss it on a partition and give it a go.

Yoni 06-03-2007 05:18 AM

running windows applications on Linux is kinda having sex in a rubber suit :)
It's better to buy a mac and get a unix based OS with all applications you use daily. But newer Macs have lots of incompatibilities with older software and a user has to use emulation to run them.

Though unix based OS's are secure, they still suck.

SuzzyQ 06-03-2007 08:10 AM

Im running Fedora Core 6 on my Dell 1501 with XP. The dual booting was no real problem. Getting the wireless to work was a challenge but, I got it. Crossover made it possible to run almost all Windows Apps on here.

I really like Fedora.

tony286 06-03-2007 10:24 AM

I tired made a mess of my system , so I stay a xp guy.

candyflip 06-03-2007 10:53 AM

I decided to redo my Media Server yesterday and installed Ubuntu. Loving it so far.

Just downloaded Ubuntu Studio to see how it works on a video editing box.

Cam94 06-03-2007 11:13 AM

Which version of linux has the filesystem that doesnt fragment the files?

Quotealex 08-10-2007 05:07 PM

bump for Ubuntu:thumbsup

dav3 08-10-2007 08:08 PM

I tried PC Linux OS on my laptop and my wireless wouldn't work right away. I put Ubuntu on it and my wireless connected right away, so that was really nice. Although, I spent 2 nights messing around trying to get Unbuntu to my windows shares and just ended up putting XP back on it.

Is there a way to connect to a windows workgroup, from ubuntu, or is that a stupid question?

Helix 08-10-2007 08:17 PM

I prefer Mepis live CD (Debian based) everything just works :)
I clicked on the install icon on the desktop and It found everything during the install. Networking with the windoze machines was a breeze with Smbk4.

yahoo-xxx-girls.com 08-10-2007 08:43 PM

Gentoo or Ubuntu !

Ubuntu and Gentoo are nice OSes, however the 64 bit versions with the SLI support kind of sucked or is not supported... However I had tried only a few months back to put such on my amd X2 and I was a little disappointed...

I'm finding Vista 64 bit version is very stable and can play some games like Unreal Tournament 2004 ... etc... however there are still many games it cannot play...

If your not playing windows video games then I would suggest everyone run either Gentoo or Ubuntu !

Later,

.

[ScreaM] 08-10-2007 08:46 PM

I'm going to be a MAC guy soon.

Emil 08-24-2007 10:11 AM

I like Ubuntu too but I have to run Windows since Visual Basic is the only programming language I know really well. And I like to automate things. I don't really have time to learn another one. (I'm lazy)

tornell 08-26-2007 01:09 PM

vista sucks

Klen 08-26-2007 01:23 PM

I have xp and ubuntu also.Ubuntu rocks. Also there is ubuntu server version which works fine on oc3networks.com.

seeric 08-26-2007 01:27 PM

VISTA = TOTAL SHIT!

I won't buy a new laptop or desktop from any store because they fuckin jam that piece of crap system on it.

I will only buy machines from tiger now or somewhere where you can choose the os.

There is no reason to switch to Vista. The OS doesn't have any features we need other then DX10, which doesn't matter until games support it. Hardware and software apps support is not great and the integrated drm sucks

Totally agree, but why Ubuntu, why not XP?

Humpy Leftnut 08-26-2007 02:30 PM

If you're curious about Ubuntu, but never heard of it, never tried it, etc.. Give you a tip! It's super easy (within windows!) to go to the Ubuntu site, download the Live CD, and boot from the disc. No HD installation necessary, it will load the OS and you can click around and do most things before deciding to install it on a partition or another machine or whatever. Neat way to blow an hour anyways.

I haven't gotten the balls up to overwrite my main OS yet, but I have enough parts for a spare PC here, so I think I'll try it on there very soon

Matt 26z 08-26-2007 02:39 PM

I like Ubuntu and Linspire. I always thought Wine could only run select Windows applications. If it can indeed run almost everything, then maybe I'll do more with Linux than just mess around with it.

With this Wine program, how do the Windows applications install in Linux? Does that handle this, or do you just start them off the Windows partition?
