i know with the newest version, it holds your contact list on the servers, then updates with you get online.
if i add somebody, i can log on from my work computer, my home desktop and my laptop and the list is auto-updated contacts, not messages its worked great for me so far

the easiest thing to do with most versions is just backup the 'newdb' folder ...

The 'newdb' folder in versions 2000 onwards are not called 'newdb' but are named after the particular version you are using. In this case, you want to save the '2000b' folder.
