50 shitty systems of measurment

DC-Sharon 05-24-2007 02:10 AM

We still use both here, although we should be 100% metric according to the EU bods

We still buy a pint of milk, or a gallon of petrol, or quarter of a pound of your finest ham please !

But you can say 250 grammes also :)

soulbleed 05-24-2007 02:18 AM

metric rules. it would be such an effort for the Americans to change. cant see it happening.

Yeah, because learning how to divide by 10 is so much harder than learning multiple, incohesive systems of measure.

How many feet in a mile?
How many meters in a kilometer?

Which of the above questions is easier to answer?

GatorB 05-24-2007 05:33 AM

First of all we do use metric. We buy our soda in 2 LITER bottles.

Actually ther was a move in the 1970's to have us on the emtric system by 1980. Why it got scrapped I don't know. I just remember having to spend lots of time in 1st-3rd grade having metric shoved up my ass then all of sudden we didn't have to learn it any more.

Why don't the Euros learn our way? Celcius WTF is that? You can't tell anything by that. I can tell 85F is a lot fucking hotter than 55F because it's 30 fucking degrees difference. The difference between 29-12 well doesn't seem too bad yet it the same fucking thing in celcius. If it's 120F degrees in Arizona I know it's WAY fucking hot. Because it's 20 over 100 which is 3 digits instead of 2. 49C WTF, is that hot or not? Who fucking knows?

nico-t 05-24-2007 05:39 AM

the same reason why they've only driven their own brand of cars for a long ass time: the idea that everything they use is better.... lately they finally started to realize their cars' quality is way below the level of quality of cars out of all other countries and they slowly start to adapt hahaha...must be hard.
Same thing goes for metric, its so much easier than the miles per hour, feet, inch, elbow or whatever other primitive measuring methods they use now, but they're just too stubborn. (by 'they' i mean the people in charge btw, the working man cant help how his country raises him)

Red states could never handle it.

Really, how are you going to sell a system with a scientific basis (ie, bases of 10) to a batshit crazy psycho religious fanatic that wants to pump an embryo full of horomones so it doesn't come out gay?

No, I'd say the average American simply doesn't want to. Call it lazy, or call it simply not wanting to do something.

Rhesus 05-25-2007 02:56 PM

It's a retarded system, and impossible to properly calculate with.

What's even more retarded is that americans often express concentrations in fluids in g/dL instead of mol/L. How can you ever easily and accurately chemically calculate reactions this way?

Except I have no idea how far a kilometer is, so that doesn't help me much.I see the war movies where they say, "they are about 5 kliks ahead." I never know WTF that means.

Temperature measurements in celcius.

0-10c = freezing your nads off
10-15c = bloody cold
15-20c = cold to mild
20-25c = nice warm day
25-35c = hot
35-40c = fucking hot put on the air-con
40+c = move to tasmania

Why should we..the whole world speaks our language and converts to our standards, not the other way around.
Haven't you figured out who's boss around this rock yet?
Besides...I'll take $3.35 a gallon, over 2.95 GBP's a litter any day.

JP513 05-25-2007 09:34 PM

Because we Americans are too stubborn to realize when another system is better and more sensible than what we're already used to. And in the rare instance when we DO realize it, we're too lazy to want to change.

The commerical language of the world is English and the metric system is the basis of measurement.

I could never be a redneck, no matter how dumb I may sound in this thread.

FYI, we learned the metric system in school, and then they just stopped teaching it. The argument at the time is that the U.S. lacked the funds to convert at that time, and it would put the already struggling auto industry in turmoil.
It was the Carter administration (1976-1980), we were in a recession, just coming off Vietnam 1965-1973), and unemployment was at 18%.
I was there, so there goes the dumb redneck comment, huh?

Nothing like actually living history:thumbsup

Seriously ... yep, can see that. The other ongoing and increasing problem is that it would cost even more now to convert - crazy money.

To specify, I was there, and living in Detroit, MI, so I saw first hand what changing the standard of measurement would have done to an already horrible economy. In the 70's the Auto industry was our leading industry in America.
It was just bad timing, and if we had tried to change at that time, it would have been a disaster.
The amount of money, not just for education, but to re tool Ford Chrysler, and GM, and train all of the employees..not to mention the military, shipping, the highways, the entire infrastructure of the country was just not there.

That's why we didn't switch, and it was probably the smartest decision that the Carter Administration made in the whole term.
