:stop USB device not recognized - This is driving my fucking nuts!

First my usb harddrive with new sites and updates dies on me. I lost weeks of work. I bought that fucking drive just a few weeks ago.

Then i tried to attach another usb drive, an old one, to my computer. It always worked and suddenly i get:

"USB device not recognized"

Now i tried all the usual stuff and nothing worked. I then went to google and guess what. Half the fucking world has that problem and not ONE solution.

I doubt anybody here has one but who knows...

You dont even have to ask did you remove the usb drivers and install again or did you reboot etc. I tried basically everything.

I had this problem in one computer when using those "cheap" external hard drive to usb 2 converters (those ones that just sit outside the HD, just a dongle, not an entire external case). After hours of research I found that it was supposedly generic drivers causing the problem with built-in USB ports... I went out and got an usb 2.0 adaptec PCI card, installed it, and didn't have any trouble using the cheap dongle anymore. It also got rid of my "delayed write failures" that I occasionally got with the cheap dongle.

Same thing happened to me - usb mass storage not recognized. After wasting too much time trying to fix it I finally bought an external hard drive enclosure with firewire. Problem solved
