what about greatest actors ?

when i was younger I would put pacino infront of all unlike my father who prefered brando and de niro mostly. Now, I have reconsidered things and I would say he was right:

1. M.Brando
2. R.D.Niro
3, A.Pacino

maybe it's stupid to rank that huge actors, but at least I'm sure everybody will agree for the title greatest independent ranking.

Not a bad list, Shawshank my #1 pick.
You guys are right, to many movies from todays generation listed.

I personally love the movie "It Happened One Night" Total classic starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert from 1934. Go rent it!

Castro!

I'd put DeNiro above all with Pacino close behind. Also I'd rank Joe "Fucking" Pesci as a great actor. Couldn't rank Brando 'cause I'm not too familiar with his work.

There are a few films that are definately under-rated. Some of my favourites that didn't make the top 250, some don't deserve to be there but are worth watching anyway:

http://us.imdb.com/Title?0106489 (should be in the top 30 at least)

That just proves that Americans need to die in large numbers.

I dont know if we're from a different generation but I would assume that we're from a different IQ level.

As for most of the movies on the list being from pre 1950 - possibly, that only goes to show how timeless a great piece of movie making can be. I personally think that the greatest decades for movies is the 30's and the 70's.

The 30's include:
  • Gone With The Wind
  • The Wizard Of Oz
  • Dodsworth
  • The Informer
  • King Kong
  • The 39 Steps
  • A Freedom For Us
  • The Blue Angel
  • The Bitch
  • M
  • The Vampire

The 70's include:
  • The Godfather
  • Taxi Driver
  • Apocalypse Now
  • Chinatown
  • Clockwork Orange
  • Jaws
  • Annie Hall
  • The Conversation

Both great decades for film making.

As a movie fanatic, I couldn't let this one slide. I think there are three basic elements to a great movie. 1) A well written, plausable sceenplay that can carry the audience through two plus hours. 2) Well casted actors that can bring the story to life in an overall ensemble and 3) a certain connection between the audience and the story unfolding on the screen.
These lists are always subjective but the Godfather and Godfather II has to be on everyone's lists. Two epic motion pictures. Those two are on top for me. The next 10 in no particular order:
JFK
Shawshank Redemption
The Deer Hunter
On the Waterfront
Raging Bull
Goodfellas
Pulp Fiction
Silence of the Lambs
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Schindler's List

I don't know much about movie making in the 30s, but you're right on about the 70s. You have to add Cukoo's Nest to the 70s list. An all-time classic.

"Braindead" by Peter Jackson

Plot Outline (from IMDB): A young man's mother is bitten by a "rat monkey." She gets sick and dies, at which time she comes back to life, killing and eating dogs, nurses, friends, and neighbors...

Does it get any better than this?
