Think about this!

In 1967 The average car was about $3,000 Now it's about $35,000

The average home cost about $35,000 Now it's about $450,000

A Gallon of gas cost about 35 cents now it's pushing towards $4.00+

The problem is the average income hasn't really risen as much! as everything else

Bottom line, It sucks!

That's because you put all that corn shit in your gas. Corn is for eating, not to run your cars on.

Incorrect.

The Octane Rating is higher. High Octane fuel burns more slowly, so is less likely to ignite as a result of compression, and is more likely to stay stable until destabilized by a spark.

Some Engines are designed for higher octane fuels, and so need the higher octane, else they'll run down prematurely.

For most cars, however, you're right in that it really doesn't matter, as they're designed for low octane fuels... and spending the extra cash is a waste.

Read your owner's manual to see what kind of fuel your car needs. Blowing the bucks on a high performance sports car and feeding it low octane fuel when the manual says it requires high octane fuel is just about as sensible as putting Premium in your Honda Civic.

You aren't telling me anything I didn't already know for years Mr Public Service Announcement. Fact is over 95% of people DO NOT need higher than 87 octane. Even if you get get better milage the extra cost wouldn't be worth it. The people can afford a fancy sports car that needs high octane gas can afford the high ocatane gas. And to be honest I don't give a rats ass about them.

Iowa's a beautiful state. It's just that it doesn't have that urban hang-out thing with the crime and drugs.

I'd buy land up in Iowa just for the peace and quiet. For the gas to be that high in Iowa is a bit worrisome. We've allowed ourselves to become complacent with these dollar in price jumps for gas when years ago people would have been up in arms if you told them gas would reach $2. Now if it's at $3 we feel like we're getting a break?

Right about now, a greedy petroleum villain would attack a major refinery and our asses as a whole would be fucked for quite some time as it takes years to build a refinery. Years of red tape and evironmental jargon and then comes the manpower.

We're too, far too vulnerable.

Well - nothing personal man, but there are obviously a few things you don't know in regard to Octane levels, because they have absolutely no bearing on mileage. High Octane and Low Octane fuel contain the same amount of energy - it's just, as I said, speed of burning (the injectors still spray the same amount of liquid in the cylinder): High Octane can withstand pressure more than Low Octane can without destabilizing.

And to avoid the "Public Service Announcement" next time, maybe you shouldn't say something that's so plainly false... especially when you're working with subject-matter that's already the subject of urban legends (such as both your 'mileage' and 'no difference' statements).

Let's chat about it all over a beer at the next show.

Are you obtuse? I was referring to the thinking of the typical dipshit premium gas buyer out there.

My car studders on 87 octane, runs fine at 91 and runs really well on 94.
I had a nissan skyline before too, anything other then chevron 94 octane and it would knock like a motherfucker.

If you drive anything decent, you actually do need premium gas... yea, I suppose you can put cheap gas in, but your performance and fuel economy will suffer and you may actually cause damage to the engine...

So? That doesn't mean you live in an "average" area.

I guess prices vary from area to area! The point I was trying to make was that gas has not gone up anymore than anything else!

good technical info with a caveat added:

many (most) modern cars have computer chip systems which will tweak (advance or retard) ignition timing to offset detonation to prevent knocking in the event you put low octane fuel in a high compession engine.

when ignition timing is retarded both performance and gas mileage will suffer (slightly.)

it it true that putting premium fuel in engines not needing it will give no performance benefit, but the converse of that (putting low octane fuel in high compression engine) will erode performance .

Gas almost as high as $5 in some places??? Now that would fuckin' scare me. I'm seeing prices as high as over $4.50 but $5 is impossible.

B.S. First off, your car should adjust for the octane levels. You car should not knock or drive differently on different octanes. It should adjust accordingly to the type of octane you put in - as cars now pretty much have laptop computers in them. Secondly, it's proven that the mileage difference between octanes is so minute that it's unmeasurable to the average public. Maybe, just maybe if you took the exact route every single day at the exact acceleration, hitting the exact lights, with the exact weather (temp/sun/wind), the exact traffic, etc etc. You'd be able to notice a difference in mileage. But even then, it's questionable if the offset in mileage would even matter since the higher octane is alot more expensive to begin with.

So, I mean really. Before you go calling people dumb. Do your reaserch. A five minute search with some reading on google would give you all the info I just posted.

Hey..I'm just following the manufacturer's suggestion. I doubt my Z would run to well on standard, nor would my 5 Series.

I do agreee though...People who drive cars that do not NEED premium gas, are just throwing their dollars away.

Its not too bad around here in CT and NY. I have been seeing a lot of hybrid cars on the road lately though. My car is pretty good on gas so I am not sweatin the prices. Its only another $5 to fill up.
