Memory Question

What is the max amount of memory you can stuff in a machine?

The tech kid at Best Buy said 512, but I know someone else with the same machine I have who said he stuffed a gig of ram in it.

Its an AMD Athlon, 1.4 ghz.

Is my ceiling 512? or a gig?

Depends how many memory slots has the mainboard.. but should have at least 2 where you can plug 2 * 512Mb.

Find out what brand/number motherboard it is and do a search on it.

It does not depend on the amount of slots you have on your mobo, but on the amount of RAM your chipset supports. You might be able to stick 1024 MB in there, or only 512. Check with the manufacturer of your motherboard.

Just read your manual. It will tell you how many slots and the max ram you can put in each.

If you buy a cheapie machine then there are limits that do not directly relate the the number of slots..
Example.. 4 slots but machine can not handle more than 512

Why ? I have no idea some tech motherboard stuff.

On high end machines I have 2 gigs on the machine we use for video and I heard you can get "risors" that will allow up to 4..

Also pc800 and pc100 behave very different.. The 800 stuff might have to be all equally matched pairs.
