Question for Photographers - good underwater cameras?

Going on a nice vacation in Sorrento this summer and looking for a camera that is pretty light weight and can atleast handle water depths to around 3-5 meters (9-16 feet). If it can go lower, then thats cool - but will mostly shoot in those depths.

Anyone have any experience in underwater cameras/photography?

Any feedback is highly appreciated.. Thanks.

Pentax has a nice little P&S waterproof. Works awesome for snorkling, it says 10 feet, but even at 22 feet it didnt get water inside and still took great pictures, its nice that the flash will work underwater if needed still

I'm a little iffy about the enclosures for the dSLR's, one little leak and its done. Not to mention its a bit hard to look through the viewfinter with the enclosure and goggles on. its hard to impossible to set some things once its in the case, none are really made for the flash to work, etc. You can tell that its deffinatly an afterthought, as as such is missing alot of usability.

A standalone waterproof dSLR is pretty pricy though.

I just used my Canon powershot SD700 in it's waterproof case for the first time last week in Margarita island while snorkeling. I wouldn't want to risk a more expensive camera if you weren't going to do it professionally plus the housings for anything bigger than a p&s are expensive.

My housing was $150, made by canon for that specific model. Or you could just get the Olympus or Pentax cameras that are already underwater capable.
