You can go to jail for not using sun screen

http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/08/21/sun....ap/index.html

This lady got arrested for not putting sun screen on her kids.

I consider a sun burn something of a natural disaster.. it just happens.

It's like.. if there was a rain storm.. and these kids got sick because the mom didn't bring an umbrella... would they arrest her for that too?

I don't remember ever blaming my parents for my sun burns when I went to the beach.

They say it was pretty bad sun burns.. but still... 15 years in jail??

I didn't know what to think at first either...

But as I got through the article I made up my mind.

They actually say... 15 years.. if she's convicted...

I hope the jury knows how stupid this is.. and if the sunburns are really that bad.. that jury will need some pretty convincing pictures.

I'm going to bet there is a lot more to this story than meets the eye.

Like the mother has been warned or suspected of child abuse in the past.

Thats the only thing I can come up with on why she would be arrested.

I couldn't believe it when I first saw the headline until I read that the kids involved are 2 years old and 10 month old twins. It's not like they could do much to get out of the sun themselves. She pushed them around a fairgrounds all day without any precautions. They ended up with second degree burns that were noticed by a sheriff at the fair grounds. Maybe instead of 15 years they should just put her out in the sun for a day or two with no sunscreen and let her suffer like the kids are.

Thats just being a stupid mother. 15 years seems a bit to the extreme.

If I were a cop I could see myself getting pissed off at a negligent parent. I once saw a woman in Queens NYC holding a bawling baby wearing just a diaper in 40 degree weather. The mother was wearing a down coat. She was chatting outside for nearly 45 minutes while the kid was crying and turning colors. I was 15 at the time, I should have shit talked her but I didn't.

But that's a cops job, helping the victimized. He did the right thing. It is the sole responsibility of the courts to decide how much at fault the woman is.

How many people put on suntan lotion before going to the fair? The local county fair was just a few weeks ago & it was hot & humid as hell. No one I know has ever put on suntan lotion to spend time at the fair. Sure, a lot of people got sick from too much sun & eating corn dogs but that's part of going to the fair. Oh, wait...here comes the sheriff & I hope he didn't notice my friend's kids puking behind the 4-H building

I knew this would be a good thread...

OK, just cause most people don't think to put on the sunscreen doesn't necessarily make it ok. Most people were throwing bricks through windows in LA once upon a time after a certain verdict came back in. Well, maybe that's debateable too...

I have always used sunscreen on my 3 year old daughter. Her stroller also had a sun visor. Even when we visit any of the theme parks, beach, anywhere we are in direct sun.
Those little kids in the news article were terribly burned, she could of prevented that.

This lady isn't fit to have kids. The law is the only thing left to protect those kids. Should she get 15 years? Probably not, what she needs is to understand that she is the only thing between her kids and harm. She needs to take the same (and greater) care with her children that she does with herself. Did you notice that the story doesn't mention her having any sun burn? She had the sense to keep herself protected from the sun, but not her kids. This is the same lady that you hear about on CNN whose kids died because she left then in the car in the summer (windows up) while she shopped at Wal-Mart.
