Photo-freaks...what's the best professional camera?

I'm going to surprise my wife with a new camera for Mother's day and need a little help picking one out. She is more of a hobbyist but has a real eye. I was looking at some EOS Rebel packages (she had hinted about Rebels) and they look like nice setups. I really don't know squat about photography or the equipment and I don't want to buy here a complete piece of shit. She had a regular Rebel (non-digital) and I believe the lenses will still work.

I'm looking to spend no more than $2000. She loves taking pictures of buildings, nature, and some macro work. She's not really into taking motion pics but I'm sure if she got a rig capable of doing it she would get into it.

What is the best one you guys can recommend with the information from above. Oh, and of course we'll use it for "misc adult" pics but that's another topic.

your title is the best professional camera, then you limit it to $2000 so you have a conflict right there

Your choice on the EOS should be just fine, especially if you have a lens collection for it already.

I shoot with two Canon 1Ds bodies ($8k each), a full line of lenses (probably about $25k worth), also have a Hasselblad 503CW ($5K) with 3 lenses (about $10K). Do they make me a better photographer? Hell yeah... but without knowing what to do with them, it's just extra money.

If she is a hobbyist, your price range is probably a good place to be.

Yeah, I noticed that a little too late. What I meant was a digital camera a step or two above the point-and-click stuff they have out. Something with exchangable lenses and so forth.

Sorry for the conflicting title and I certainly appreciate your input. From all the consumer reviews I've read, the Canon has pretty good reviews.

Bang for your buck a Nikon D200 is hands down, $1599 I think it is now and nobody can touch it for that price, has the same guts as a D2X.
