Shaving Algorithms - what's the best?

Just wondering. I've done a tester and sent 559 hits to a sponsor today, and they report 391.

Uncannily it's 70%. Is that normal in this business? In the 5 years I've been playing this dumb affiliate game, I've never really bothered to check, but hungover as hell, I thought it would be fun.

How ripped off do you feel today? Maybe I should work for microshaft instead.

Directly from my logs, with a tracking code in it - first page.

Not naming sponsor. All sponsors seem as bad as each other.

It does suck though. I've had that feeling from a few sponsors before, never checked the % though. I've also heard of companies that "give" new affiliates sales for a while to get them amp'd up to push more, then start pulling back so they have to push harder to get sales. Very shitty practices IMHO.

You should contact the sponsor and ask how they count hits before you start saying they are shaving.

Then it can only be:

I have actually done this test before, with adwords and a few other places. 70% seems the norm with "good" sponsors. Some sponsors blatantly take the piss reporting 40% of the hits or so. Needless to say they are dropped like a lead balloon.

Maybe I should quit whining and set up my own paysit, robbing affiliates and punters like everyone else?

Have YOU ever tested this? Seriously. Do it. You'll be surprised...or maybe not.

there are quite a few sponsors that count join page hits, which is AWESOME (not)

nothing like sending 1000 uniques to a sponsor and seeing 20 hits in the admin

Yup, it's only a matter of time and many sponsors will only count female mexican visitors clicking at least 5 times.

Then when you message the rep they say "you're doing 1:800 with us that's a good ratio"

To be honest, I don't care how a sponsor count. Let them count 4:th page uniques or only join page filling out the form uniques. Doesn't matter to me. All that matters to me is the payout amount at the end of the month. If I'm unhappy with that amount I switch sponsor because I know what my traffic is worth.

Lots of programs will count as few hits as possible, but they don't shave the signups. This is so newbies will think WOW 1:50 this sponsor must be the best. A newbie will not understand that his real ratio might be 1:1000...

Click stats means nothing. Unless you're talking about a pay per click sponsor here? Then I understand why you're upset.

Well, the big question is: Why offer any click stats as a sponsor if they aren't accurate ? Why not tell your affiliates: Go, count your hits yourself ? Even webmasters with little experience will only take a week to find out how the click count of a sponsor really works, it's not like people don't see the differences.

I think it's a pretty silly game, I can count on my own, no problem, but if you offer me stats, make them useful for me. The sad thing is that some really good programs around for a long time use join page unique count. I don't drop them for doing so, they make me alot of money, but new affiliates will feel ripped off once they find out, it makes good sponsors look bad...

Some of you folks just don't get it. affiliateprogramshavingFTL.com/=?trackingcodewetrackandtellyou

Forget about join pages, entry pages, whereverthefuck pages.

Why do sponsors even bother with all that join pages bullshit - one of them I stopped promoting even though earning reasonably well was because of all that first page / second page / join bullshit. I DON'T give a fuck. How many uniques did I send you, how much $ did I get -- GET IT SPONSORS?

yes...it only matters about uniques and money

1st page 2nd page etc..is purely for the sponsor to be able to track the effectiveness of ther tour.

one for me one for you doesnt go over well with anyone....$$$$$ in a big fat check every week is the only truth

Which major sponsors were created by Adult Webmasters themselves? You know, people who started out the same way as most of us here. Doesn't xxxjay own OCCash, or co-own it? I can't imagine someone who's been a regular affiliate would shave if he one day became the owner of a sponsor. It would be interesting to find out if anyone knew what the lever bar is set at for shaving there.

If you don't count your outgoing clicks, divide the monthly cheque by that number and use that as your guide by sending your traffic to the sponsor with the highest per click figure... then really you've got no one to blame but yourself. I honestly don't see the problem. Some sponsors only count join page hits. IT DOESN"T MATTER. Look at YOUR traffic and YOUR cheques.. it's the only way to put all sponsors and their myriad ways of counting second hits on pages in fibonacci sequences on a level playing field.

I'm pretty sure there is some legitimate reason why the click counts don't match up... they might count uniques based on ips, you may count it with cookies, they may filter certain user agents, which you don't... etc...

Well... the best is the one-for-you-one-for-us spreadsheet, but that don't work too well these days.

Next is the "90 day success period" - eg signups to encourage for up to 90 days so ya pump more traffic at em - then nothing.

Next is "but we only count join pages", but only of blind surfers from Ukraine.

Favorite rep questions - "Maybe we can help you get better traffic?" - like they would have a clue. Another is, "You are doing very well and getting a great conversion of 1:500." - problem there is ya sent ten times that to a join page and only shows 1500.

It's always amazing sending traffic to your own paysites and somehow the join pages get correct counts and the conversions are better - must be another coincidence...
