Like he lost his best friend

Stupid dog. He had a toy that I gave him the day I picked him up from Indiana. He loved that thing. Whenever I left town he carried it around with him constantly. It was the one thing that he literally played with every day. It was his comfort item. He always knew where it was, and if I said, "get your toy" he always knew exactly where it was.

Last night he destroyed it.

I almost feel sorry for him. He is moping around, and I can tell that he is looking in all his old hiding spots for it. I can't just replace it because I hve never seen another one, and goodgirl looked at the store I bought it at, and they don't have them any more.

I know if I get him something else he will just tear it up. Any suggestions?

My spaniel loves those toys that are strings knotted up but I had to stop getting them because these days she can have one totally taken apart within 24 hours.

haha . . . shortly after I got Buddy I took him over to visit one of my girlfriends and her dog. She had one of those that had a knotted ball at one end and a hand grip at the other.

Her dog had no interest in it, and Buddy seemed to love it, so she said to go ahead and bring it home since he liked it so much.

When we got here, he spent the next two hours with this toy. I was thinking that he must really love it. In fact, he had spent the entire time chewing it in the middle so that it was now 2 toys, instead of one.

Last night I gave him a golf ball, figuring that they are rather indestructable, and it would give him something to play with. I woke up this morning to a golf ball that had no cover. He had not bothered getting into the chewy center yet.

If I give him those chewing bones that are strong enough to resist his chompers he takes them outside and buries them (for the winter I guess).

I am really at a loss. I wonder if I get him fixed if they will let me bring his balls home and he can play with them.

I had the same thing happen with Cayman. Stupid little bear and I can't find a new one after he killed the original.

I still look every time I'm in a store with pet toys.

We can't give our lab toys with strings or rope toys anymore. He tears right through them in less then a few hours. We now have found some harder rubber balls that he likes to play with. They have been lasting atleast a month until he choose through it eventually.

A lot of stuffed animal type toys for dogs have those knotted string things as legs. So, we have a bunch of animals around that house that have had amputations carried out.

Do you have a meat market nearby?

If so....Go in and ask them if they have any fresh cow leg bones. Around here a 5 lb bone...which is huge...costs about $2.50 and even has some meat hanging off of it.

Those hold Cayman over for about a week....Should last Buddy about 2 weeks and he probably won't bury it right away because it's fresh and real.

I know the toy you are talking about. Sadie bit me while playing with that thing.

Lloyd,
Take the dog with you to the pet store. We always take our Shepard and let him pick out his own stuff and yes I do believe it makes a difference. Toys we buy and just bring home he rarely has any interest in at all and will allow my brothers dogs to take over when they are here, but the ones he picks out he will fight for.

Good Luck!

can you explain the toy again? sometimes the same pet stores in different areas have them (i also used to work at a doggy boutique and have a whole rash of suppliers and other small boutiques i might be able to find you a stock of buddy's favourite toy).

lee.loo LOVES piggies, lucky for me this started with a very common plushy squeaky toy made by booda and i just bought 5 of them right off the bat after i saw how much she loved the one. now it's even better though, i've generalised the term 'piggy' to other piggy toys, and now any of her toys is called a piggy unless it's edible then it's a chewy, treat, or bully stick.

Let's take Buddy and Gigi to the park or beach this week...

Gigi is so damn cheerful and emotional all the time she will snap him right out of it...

It was a stuffed toy shaped like a stereo-typical dog bone. The only reason I picked it up was because it had the H-D logo on it. He has destroyed much stronger items with ease but for some reason, treated this with kid gloves . . . until last night. I think because it rode with him on his flight from IN to LA

I wish I would have thought of that. The toy I mentioned was by Booda as well.

My pups don't care too much for any specific toys. They do however have one "bed" that they fight over constantly. It's always a race to see who gets it first when we leave the house.

Have heard bones aren't very good for their teeth. And yeah, same kind of toy as Sadie has, but a different one

Don't think they will let me bring him in the store, much less let him maul their selection. Interesting idea though.

I would love to go to the beach, just have so much going on right now. Breaking away for an hour to get him to the dog park is a chore sometimes. If you guys want to come up to the South Bay we will gladly accompany you to the dog park though.

Hey baddog, was it a white plush booda bone? I just saw a bunch and other colors at the store. Was getting toys for my new pup. Best bet is get him a similiar toy and see if he likes it the same or just rips it up.

I got my puppy a stuffed squirrel I believe made by AKC, she adores it.

Try the drsfostersmith.com site, they have tons of cool dog toys. In fact, maybe try this one?

Kong makes a big rubber toy you can fill with peanut butter and/or kibble. Have not many dogs that dint like that for a few hours at least when you have to fill it again.

The Kong toy is as tough as they come. I've always had LABS and Boxers.. and NONE of them have been able to chew through these.

The ONLY dog I-ve ever seen go to town on this toy was frind of mines. But that dog was a 110 lb American Stafordshire. That dog chewed through sold steel! and it would still take him 3 to 4 hours to get this toy apart. He was relentless!

Yeah I agree Kong is the best toy for dogs. They come in different shapes and sizes, and they're hollow in the center. You can put peanut butter in the center and the dog will have a grand old time trying to lick it out.

They actually make Kong dispensers for seperation anxiety too. They're set to spit out a Kong with peanutbutter (or whatever else you put in it) every few hours. Dogs go nuts, I've seen a dog sit in front of it patiently for an hour waiting for the fresh Kong.

No way man. Kong's come in different sized and different strengths. The black ones are the strongest. My male Rottweiler has one so big Buddy probably couldn't fit his jaws around it. A proper sized one will last him for a long, long time. They're also strange shaped so if he drops it, it will bounce funny and be fun to chase. All my dogs like their kongs best of all their toys.

Believe it or not, I have heard of dogs ripping these apart. Just take a look at the reviews for them at dog.com. It is rare, but some very strong dogs find a way.

baddog, what kind of dog do you have? If it's a medium to small sized dog, you probably don't have to worry. Be careful to buy the appropriate sized Kong if you get one. Don't get a Black one for a small dog.

He is a mutt, looks like a border collie. I would not get one he couldn't gnaw on.

Thats the exact same thing here. I can't give my dog string or rope toys, as she will eat them and get sick.

The large breed strong rubber toys they make these days is all she gets now as she cant chew it quite as easily or as quickly

Border Collies are the single most intelligent dog breed there is. Post a picture of him on here. It's common for people to have trouble deciphering which breed mixes their dogs are.
