Direct Cable Connection on XP

I forgot to copy a lot of data from one of our old pcs to the new one, I am trying to get that data with a DCC. Only XP has the option where I can set that up diasabled. Anybody any idea how that could be?

I have a few other PCs in my Network, so I cannot hook the oldest one up as well.

Any suggestions?

If I am not mistaken, direct cable connection is the good old Null Modem. You need a special cable (null modem cable) to connect two PCs via serial port. Then you use any terminal program (the one with shipped with any Windows version will do) and tranfer data over the COM port. It will take forver.

OK I read your post again... it seems like you have your old PC connected to the network via Ethernet. So what you need to do is go to your old PC and share the folder (right-click > properties > sharing) you want to transfer. Then you go to your new PC and hopefully you will find your old PC in the Network Neighbourhood (Computers Near Me). Then you just drag shit over.

People had some problems with older versions on Windows on the network with Windows XP. You might need to type in

\\192.168.0.1\

into the address field in your XP box in order to see the other computer. Substitute 192.168.0.1 with the IP address of your old PC.

Nope, this old box is NOT connected through ethernet anymore, that is why I use the null modem type of transfer. I know it takes forever, but that is my mistake. I burned copies of every directory I have but one, that one I need now

I am afraid it is about 150 Mb of data, so it will indeed take very long. Anyway, I do need those files now.

I tried another way. I have another PC with W98 in my network, so I thought of using that as the 'guest' and then copy from there to the XP box through my network. That way I don't have to figure out how it works in XP, but the W98 keeps saying "Status: Parallel cable on LTP1 disconnected", which I do not understand.

I'm sure I have setup the host and guest correctly.

Any other takers?

150 is not a lot of data. If you want an easier alternative than FTP I would suggest you look at your instant messaging clients that are already on your computer. You can transfer files via ICQ and all the other IMs. Just look at the send file option.
All you have to do is setup another account to act as the receiver.

Sounds to me that you're using a wrong port. Every null-modem cable I saw is a serial, not parallel, and thus connects to a COM port. If you did in fact find a parallel null-modem cable, you're a brave man and I wish you good luck.

Yes, depending on your FTP software.

Forget about it

I unplugged one of the network cables, the one from XP, shoved it in the old PC and I restored the old network connection I had going previously. Copying the files now through Explorer, so all is good

Thanks for the suggestions.
