How do you guys handle health insurance?

I've been self-employed for quite some time and today is the first time I had to go to a doctor. Needless to say I had no health insurance and got royally fucked. How do you guys do it? Are there any policies or providers that you'd suggest?

Dude my only advice to you is get some!

It might be tax deductible also, depending on your tax laws.

I took care of mine by living in the UK. Not that the NHS is the best system to have to deal with, but frankly, it's better than a fricking HMO. Yeuch.

Look in the want ads and call some doctor offices. Most areas have coalitions of self employed people that band together to get good rates on health and life insurance.

Its sort of like getting company coverage but naturally you have to pay the 'company half' yourself, which IS tax deductible as long as you have some form of a company and pay yourself a wage-salary from the company accounts etc. Then you usually can write off your own contribution on your personal tax forms.

You save a good deal but it still runs more than if you worked for some other company. You can also work as a temp and get to have coverage in some cases as part time. You could call them and ask if they offer full coverage for PT workers. Work 2 days then the next week 3 days in one factory or another. Helps to get you out of the house as well.

I'm in the us and I would advise you to get insurance. Look for providers in your local area.

This adult game has almost killed me I believe, from being stuck inside the house and neglecting my body. All sorts of health problems sprung up and I realised I was killing myself with the bad eat, exercise and sleeping habits.

I finally just got insurance a couple months ago after an appeal and am still getting worked over with tests cause of some problems. I'm lucky I guess cause I already had some conditions. I would suggest you get insurance asap before something bad happens. Hospitilizations costs alone could cost a ton of money.

Also my tax guy said something like 60% of the premiums for insurance are tax deductable. I'm in my 20's and got insurance at a place called kaiser for only $123 /month. I only pay a small fee per prescription and office visit. Everything else is covered.

seriously, all insurance companies suck. take care of yourself and try to see them as little as possible. that should be your goal, imo, rather than finding a cheap way to see them.

Socialised medicine works and should be adopted everywhere.
We have it in Australia as well and the bottom line is that everyone is guaranteed heathcare... and thats the way it should be.

it works, works better than health insurance too. health insurance that has a $100 deductable when you never get sick anyways, meaning they cover exactly jack shit.

i have health insurance through an employer, but i've used it once in two years (saw a doctor about 5 years ago before then). but i had to pay because of the deductable.

and in any case, rather than me feeding in to the problem with health care (overpriced perscription drugs, true costs hidden from customers, which helps to keep the costs so high - amongst other problems) i am healthy instead.

You're healthy now bro, but it might not always stay that way. Over my lifetime I've probably racked up $200k in medical bills, hell I can't even get insurance. Thank God insurance companies pay for kids while they're still students. Don't know what I'll do next year...

But anyway, paying $100 a month is nothing compared to owing the hospitals thousands upon thousands of dollars. It might not happen to you, but then again it just might... it's a major gamble that is not needed, a gamble that could really fuck up your life.

You've gotta get yourself health insurance. If you come down with something serious you are ass fucked. You're bank account will be drained before you blink. Hospital rooms cost more than a fucking four star hotel. I've been self employed for a year now and I use Blue Cross. I've had numerous doctor's appointments to take care of various ailments and having the plan has been well worth the premiums paid. Whatever you do, don't get an HMO plan, they are cocksuckers.

Adult Revenue Service also provides health insurance. They'll actually pay your premiums if you reach a certain level of sales per month, which is pretty badass. There's probably a catch somewhere in there, but I haven't joined so I don't know what it is. Make sure you get some health insurance, because doctors and hospitals have no problem assraping you for money. You need an insurance company to take that pounding for you.

That's why I have another job.. I'm diabetic. It'd cost about $600/mo for insurance if I bought it independently ... I tried. Otherwise I'd quit the day job.

I have insurance now but when I didn't I went on something called free care with a major hospital. You show them your last 2 check stubs and if it's low enough they will give you free care. It's only for emergencies and prescriptions aren't covered, but thats better than nothing.

maybe a hospital in your area offers that.

Or just get a job with benefits, quit after a week and go on Cobra.

every state has negotiated rates with all the major medical providers.
you dont have to be poor to get them ..
just contact the state insurance department..

Canada's health care will fuck you up..
my neighbor's kid almost died
because he had medical emergency while on vacation and Canada has shitty wannabe doctors.

Nope, that's not a good option either. I had a job where I had been there for three years, only paid $42.00 a month (that was my "employeee contribution") for full family coverage (both dental & medical) and when I quit and applied for Cobra, they told me it would cost me $620.00 per month for insurance coverage - and that was only for me. That didn't cover the dental either.

Luckily, my husband wound up changing jobs and getting better health insurance so we're covered again. The healthcare system in the US sucks. You work hard all of your life and in alot of cases, you have inadequate or no health insurance at all. Something's definately wrong with this picture.

Hide in the back of a truck heading for Folkestone. The government will feed and house you and family of 25.

Anyway, the prices are super high here due to insane amount of tax (Northern Ireland introduced a tax on plastic grocery bags).

Of course everyone hopes that they'll be fine, but if something fucks up, then the money spent on taxes eventually comes full circle and ends up paying for your heart, liver, pancreas, whatever transplant. The NHS is supposed to be in a bad state, so it is still best to search for private health care.

On a side note - looking at the transplant costs in the USA, I wouldn't like to be an average 9-5 guy that suddenly gets sick without health insurance. Not many average citizens have that kind of money stashed under their matress:

Heart, $50,000 - $300,000, average: $150,000
Liver, $70,000 - $370,000, average: $235,000
Pancreas, $50,000 - $135,000, average: $70,000
