Designers, knock some sence into my brother

alright, so my brother is a pretty good designer...makes some nice stuff...But he has his resolution set to 1280 x 1024

I keep telling him to set his resolution lower, as everything he is making looks awsome at 1280 x 1024, but you cannot judge what itll look like at the lower resolutions....and a very small percentage of people have their resolution set that high.

so, he sais im wrong...and it doesnt make a difference at what resolution he designs at....

So, who is in the right here? Someone talk some sence into this thick headed little fucker please

I don't think it matters.. I'm at 1024 and I can still judge what will look good on 800x600..

But go ahead and knock him one for me...

As long as you know what it's going to look like in lower resolutions, and frequently check out the design in those lower resolutions as you're going. There's no problem.

It's fairly easy to judge most of the time, and if not, a simple check will do.

According to my sites statistics, over 60% of the surfers (to my sites) use 800x600

The other 40% are mixed (higher resolutions)...

When designing in Photoshop, I just start with a blank image with a width of 800 px and stay in that.

Most computers are coming with 17 in monitors.. but alot still come with 15in.. so design for 800 x 600 until 15in monitors become outdated

tell him to do a screen capture of the browser maximised in then target resolution. make sure that nav bars etc are on.

this will give u the working area.... paste into top layer in photoshop docs and make the working area transparent... then when hide the layer.... whenever you want to see what its going to look like just turn the layer on

at that res he should desing 730/330 which fills the 800/600 and still looks good on the 1280/1024

1600x1200 here ...

with a 19 inch monitor, you really can't set your res to 800x600 because everything comes out MASSIVE ... so you don't get an accurate idea.

Monitor resolution is starting to progress to 1024x768 as the majority .. up until recently it was 800x600 ... the important thing is to make sure whatever you are designing fits easily into 800x600 (at least the important stuff). pretty soon that number will change to 1024x768 as those 800x600 mofos start to drop off =)

I hear ya man.. 1600x1200 here too, as long as you design within a 800x600 or smaller window and check sharpness etc at smaller resolutions, you're fine!

none designer uses 800x600 resolution to work, actually it's the opposite. Near all designers have way higher resolutions than the rest computer users. It's not hard to check or even estimate what your page length will be! So......Meta.....your brother.........is FUCKING RIGHT! :-)
