When I was a kid I used to watch him in a PBS education series about whales called 'The Voyage of the Mimi'. My mom is a science teacher and we got to meet most of the cast except for him. Now I wish we had gotten his autograph back when he was a kid actor so I could cash it in now before his game is totally up.

Did you see Leaving Las Vegas and Bringing Out The Dead?

OldJeff 05-01-2007 04:18 AM

Tom Cruise - He has never been more than a smile.

Denzel - he is always the same guy, full of him self asshole that thinks the world owes him something (I figure that is pretty much him in real life)

Leo - The poster boy for form above function

Gangs of NY - Daniel Day Lewis Owned that movie, not Leo
Blood Diamond - Have not seen yet
The Departed - This movie pretty much sucked, and on top of that he sure as hell should not have been sharing screen time with Jack
The Man In The Iron Mask - crappy movie where again he was overshadowed by far better actors in lesser roles
The Basketball Diaries - Did not see it
What's Eating Gilbert Grape - Depps movie, ask 100 people that saw the movie 99 will not remember that Leo was in it.

Leo is eye candy for some - nothing more than that will he ever be

John Wayne

GatorB 05-02-2007 05:01 AM

In order to be OVERrated you must first be RATED. So people like Steven Segal don't count. To me overrated means you are given more redit than you actually deserve. I've never heard anyone glow about Steven Segal's acting abilities. So let's eliminiate action stars and most comedians. I don't expect "acting" in comedies. Now comedians that get into serious acting can count. For example Tom Hanks. Which I think he's very good. In fact one one of the rare people that is equally good at both comedy and serious acting. There are lots of great "actors" that suck at being funny in a movie.

Morgan Freeman seems like a very nice person, but isn't he basically Morgan Freeman in every movie? Probably the one exception is when he played a pimp in Street Smart.

Denzel's performance in Training Day I think made up for a lot of the roles that seemed a bit too similar

What can we conclude from the answers? It is all subjective.

I'm always surprised when I see people say DiCaprio is a bad actor. The guy is amazing. People just seem to hate the pretty boys of hollywood. Blood Diamond, The Departed, The Aviator: All good roles that he absolutely nailed.

Just like Hemmingway wasn't REALLY America's greatest author, John Wayne was never REALLY American's greatest actor. He, like Hemmingway, was just the BALLS of the nation for a few generations.

I always thought he was a bit too pretty to be Peter Parker. The guy is supposed to symbolize the average joe

I have to add that I don't think anyone overrates him though. Everyone pretty much knows that he's only a so-so actor.

Have to admit he surprised me with his performance in "The Cider House Rules" though
