This movie takes place BEFORE silence of the Lambs. Red Dragon was actually the first book about Hannibal. Ed Norton plays FBI Agent Will Graham who was played by Scott Glenn in Silence of the Lambs even thought they changed his name from the book. Agent Graham is the one who caught Lecter and uses him in Red Dragon to help catch another serial killer played by Ralph Fiennes.

yes, this is supposed to take place 15-20 years before Hannibal and yet Lecter looks 30 years older and 30 pounds heavier.. oh well, you know it will still put a bunch of asses in seats.

The movie with Anthony Hopkins that I really want to see is The Devil and Daniel Webster.. Jennifer Love Hewitt plays ol' Scratch..should be interesting..

I liked that book. But to each their own. Also, you can see an earlier movie version, named Manhunter. William Peterson from CSI stars in it, and I think it was directed by Michael Mann, from Miami Vice fame. Had a nice scene in a parking garage with a wheelchair.

I like Ralph Fiennes, but he does not fit the description of the Tooth Fairy.

it was mainly the last half.. or third.. had the feeling of being rushed or filler... there is a very distinct change in the writing tone.. as if he had a week to finish it after writing solidly for months. and the ending was lame... it became more farce than thriller. just my

This is not only a prequel, but a remake of a remarkably good thriller, Manhunter (1986) based on the same novel. William L. Peterson (currently best known for his role as the team leader in CSI on TV), plays the role taken by Edward Norton in the more recent version. Brian Cox (The Bourne Identity, X-Men) plays Lecter.

I seriously doubt if the remake can hold a candle to Manhunter, but I'm definitely going to see it anyway.

BTW, William L. Peterson made another great movie at about the same time, To Live And Die In L.A. This and Manhunter would make a good video rental double-feature.
