April 24 - Armenian Genocide
Today marks the 91 years of denial . Over 1.5 million Armenians were killed.
The atrocities committed against the Armenian people of the Ottoman Empire during W.W.I are called the Armenian Genocide. Genocide is the organized killing of a people for the express purpose of putting an end to their collective existence. Because of its scope, genocide requires central planning and a machinery to implement it. This makes genocide the quintessential state crime as only a government has the resources to carry out such a scheme of destruction. The Armenian Genocide was centrally planned and administered by the Turkish government against the entire Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire. It was carried out during W.W.I between the years 1915 and 1918. The Armenian people was subjected to deportation, expropriation, abduction, torture, massacre, and starvation. The great bulk of the Armenian population was forcibly removed from Armenia and Anatolia to Syria, where the vast majority was sent into the desert to die of thirst and hunger. Large numbers of Armenians were methodically massacred throughout the Ottoman Empire. Women and children were abducted and horribly abused. The entire wealth of the Armenian people was expropriated. After only a little more than a year of calm at the end of W.W.I, the atrocities were renewed between 1920 and 1923, and the remaining Armenians were subjected to further massacres and expulsions. In 1915, thirty-three years before UN Genocide Convention was adopted, the Armenian Genocide was condemned by the international community as a crime against humanity. Here are some powerful words by William Saroyan
"I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia. See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread and water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a new Armenia." |

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF GENOCIDE SCHOLARS
President Israel Charny (Israel) First Vice-President Gregory H. Stanton (USA) Second Vice-President Linda Melvern (UK) Secretary-Treasurer Steven Jacobs (USA) June 13, 2005 Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan TC Easbakanlik Bakanlikir Ankara, Turkey Dear Prime Minister Erdogan: We are writing you this open letter in response to your call for an ?impartial study by historians? concerning the fate of the Armenian people in the Ottoman Empire during World War I. We represent the major body of scholars who study genocide in North America and Europe. We are concerned that in calling for an impartial study of the Armenian Genocide you may not be fully aware of the extent of the scholarly and intellectual record on the Armenian Genocide and how this event conforms to the definition of the United Nations Genocide Convention. We want to underscore that it is not just Armenians who are affirming the Armenian Genocide but it is the overwhelming opinion of scholars who study genocide: hundreds of independent scholars, who have no affiliations with governments, and whose work spans many countries and nationalities and the course of decades. The scholarly evidence reveals the following: On April 24, 1915, under cover of World War I, the Young Turk government of the Ottoman Empire began a systematic genocide of its Armenian citizens ? an unarmed Christian minority population. More than a million Armenians were exterminated through direct killing, starvation, torture, and forced death marches. The rest of the Armenian population fled into permanent exile. Thus an ancient civilization was expunged from its homeland of 2,500 years. The Armenian Genocide was the most well-known human rights issue of its time and was reported regularly in newspapers across the United States and Europe. The Armenian Genocide is abundantly documented by thousands of official records of the United States and nations around the world including Turkey?s wartime allies Germany, Austria and Hungary, by Ottoman court-martial records, by eyewitness accounts of missionaries and diplomats, by the testimony of survivors, and by decades of historical scholarship. The Armenian Genocide is corroborated by the international scholarly, legal, and human rights community: 1) Polish jurist Raphael Lemkin, when he coined the term genocide in 1944, cited the Turkish extermination of the Armenians and the Nazi extermination of the Jews as defining examples of what he meant by genocide. 2) The killings of the Armenians is genocide as defined by the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. 3) In 1997 the International Association of Genocide Scholars, an organization of the world?s foremost experts on genocide, unanimously passed a formal resolution affirming the Armenian Genocide. 4) 126 leading scholars of the Holocaust including Elie Wiesel and Yehuda Bauer placed a statement in the New York Times in June 2000 declaring the ?incontestable fact of the Armenian Genocide? and urging western democracies to acknowledge it. 5) The Institute on the Holocaust and Genocide (Jerusalem), and the Institute for the Study of Genocide (NYC) have affirmed the historical fact of the Armenian Genocide. 6) Leading texts in the international law of genocide such as William A. Schabas?s Genocide in International Law (Cambridge University Press, 2000) cite the Armenian Genocide as a precursor to the Holocaust and as a precedent for the law on crimes against humanity. We note that there may be differing interpretations of genocide?how and why the Armenian Genocide happened, but to deny its factual and moral reality as genocide is not to engage in scholarship but in propaganda and efforts to absolve the perpetrator, blame the victims, and erase the ethical meaning of this history. We would also note that scholars who advise your government and who are affiliated in other ways with your state-controlled institutions are not impartial. Such so-called ?scholars? work to serve the agenda of historical and moral obfuscation when they advise you and the Turkish Parliament on how to deny the Armenian Genocide. In preventing a conference on the Armenian Genocide from taking place at Bogacizi University in Istanbul on May 25, your government revealed its aversion to academic and intellectual freedom?a fundamental condition of democratic society. We believe that it is clearly in the interest of the Turkish people and their future as a proud and equal participants in international, democratic discourse to acknowledge the responsibility of a previous government for the genocide of the Armenian people, just as the German government and people have done in the case of the Holocaust. |

OVER 200 HOUSE AND SENATE MEMBERS URGE PRESIDENT BUSH TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE GENOCIDE
Washington, DC - The Armenian Assembly of America credited a unified community effort as 178 House Members today sent a letter urging President Bush to properly acknowledge the attempted annihilation of the Armenian people as Genocide while the Senate readied a letter with 31 signatures at press time. The congressional letters were initiated by Senators John Ensign (R-NV) and Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues Caucus Co-Chairs Joe Knollenberg (R-MI) and Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) respectively. "As a world leader, it is important that the United States reaffirm the incontestable facts of history witnessed and reported by U.S. Ambassador Henry Morgenthau and acknowledged by others including President Ronald Reagan," said Ensign and Durbin. "Denial of the Armenian Genocide diminishes the value we place on human life and the principles of liberty on which this country is founded." "The Armenian Genocide is incontrovertible, of which the U.S. Archives is replete with thousands of pages documenting this horrific crime," said Co-Chairs Knollenberg and Pallone. "The President has employed a textbook definition of genocide to describe the events that occurred from 1915-1923, but a full and irrevocable U.S. affirmation of the Armenian Genocide is necessary to prevent such crimes from happening in the future." "We thank Senators Ensign and Durbin and Congressmen Knollenberg and Pallone for circulating these critical initiatives requesting that the President reaffirm the Armenian Genocide," said Board of Trustees Chairman Hirair Hovnanian. "We also thank the Armenian-American community for their unified effort in urging their Congressmen to support Genocide reaffirmation in the face of Turkey's ongoing denial campaign." In March, hundreds of activists from across the country attended the Assembly's pan-Armenian Conference where they urged lawmakers to sign on to the letters during meetings on Capitol Hill. In his commemorative statement last year, President Bush did not use the term "Armenian Genocide," and instead offered the textbook definition of this crime against humanity. "On Armenian Remembrance Day, we remember the forced exile and mass killings of as many as 1.5 million Armenians during the last days of the Ottoman Empire," the President said in part. The Assembly looks forward to the President's annual April 24 statement and plans to report on his speech to the community. The Armenian Assembly of America is the largest Washington-based nationwide organization promoting public understanding and awareness of Armenian issues. It is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt membership organization. ### NR#2006-037 Editor's Note: The complete list of U.S. Senators and Representatives who have signed their names to the congressional letters is provided below. I agree this atrocity needs to be acknowledged.
It is a tough political trick though. Turkey is now an ally, in a very hostile part of the world.

Things like this need to be remembered so they don't happen again.
Tomorrow is Holocaust Remembrance I really wish that nothing like this repeats in the future.

System of a down
P.L.U.C.K. Elimination, Elimination, Elimination Die, Why, Walk Down, Walk Down A whole race Genocide, Taken away all of our pride, A whole race Genocide, Taken away, watch them all fall down. Revolution, the only solution, The armed response of an entire nation, Revolution, the only solution, We've taken all your shit, now it's time for restitution. Recognition, Restoration, Reparation, Recognition, Restoration, Reparation, Watch them all fall down. Revolution, the only solution, The armed response of an entire nation, Revolution, the only solution, We've taken all your shit, now it's time for restitution. The plan was mastered and called Genocide (Never want to see you around) Took all the children and then we died, (Never want to see you around) The few that remained were never found, (Never want to see you around) All in a system of Down......Down.....Down.......Down........Walk Down........... Know Cursed Earth, Cursed Earth, Cursed Earth, Cursed Earth. I will never feed off the evergreen luster of your heart all because we all live in the valley of the walls when we speak we can peak from the windows of their mouths to see the land the women chant as they fly up to the sun. You never think you know why, Know, You never think you know why, Know, You never think you know why, Know, Ever think you know why, Know. Books all say different things while people flap their yellow wings trying to soar by being a whore of life and almost everything the sheep that ran off from the herd may be dead but now's a bird able to fly able to die able to break your cursed earth You never think you know why, Know, You never think you know why, Know, You never think you know why, Know, Ever think you know why, Know. On the other side, on the other side, the other side, Do you ever try to fly, Do you ever try to fly? Have you ever wanted to die, you ever want to die? Don't ever try to fly, don't ever try to fly, Don't ever try to fly, unless you leave your body on the other side, Never try to die, you ever try to die. Know, You never think you know why, Know, You never think you know why, Know, You never think you know why, Know, Ever think you know why, Know. Watch them all fall down, Revolution, the only solution, The armed response of an entire nation, Revolution, the only solution, We've taken all your shit, now it's time for restitution. The plan was mastered and called Genocide (Never want to see you around) Took all the children and then we died, (Never want to see you around) The few that remained were never found, (Never want to see you around) All in a system , Down~
