Oh, i always enjoy that.

Anyway, im setting up Vbulletin right now. I used it briefly in the past but couldnt, from the outside, really notice anything i didnt have in phpbb. But yeah it makes sense its way better secured.

Vbuletin has better security, but if you know to manage phpbb then you dont need to bother with security.

the #1 thing I can think of right off the bat is spammers have a harder time hitting vbulletin with forumspambots

my phpbb installs get 20-30 a day, vbulletin gets 1-2 a day

phpbb is a VERY easy forum to use forum spam bots on

The only reason phpbb is less secure is because its free and open source whereas vbulletin you have to pay for. The more exposure the code gets the more likely exploits will come up.

Actually the reason phpbb is less secure is not because it's free but because its poorly coded. Any idiot can download a vbulletin copy by a simple google search, so its not like hackers have any troubles getting their hands on it.

As already said, security is better (not perfect, but much better) and you have less problems with those damn spambots.

I kinda liked phpBB alot, but at the moment it's pretty much suicide to use it.

Quite the opposite, open source creates more secure software in the end.

EVERY type of forum software in its "out of the box" form is susceptible to exploits..people act like a Vbulletin board has never been hacked or spammed..and thats just not the case.

I run several forums and have used or do use most of the top 5 forum software at one time or another..they all have the ability to be exploited in some way or another..you HAVE to keep them updated when they offer a patch..plain and simple...same goes for Vbulletin or phpBB.

Some have advantages/features/mods that others don't..just depends on what you need.

It is interesting that the largest board on the net runs phpBB...take a look at these numbers taken 5 mins ago:

Who is Online? - 65331 users. (57972 visible, 4175 hidden, 3184 guests).

**** has 1,010,267,380 articles posted with 7,031,227 registered users.

Most users ever online was 86,738 on Thu Jan 04, 2007 3:00 pm

interesting huh?...lol I guess phpBB has something going for it

If you keep up with the updates and have secure server settings, phpbb will run just fine for you...
