Depends on the definition of "webmistress". My definition of webmistress would include someone who can setup/manage their own dedicated servers from scratch and do the install and full config of the operating system, apache, mySQL, etc.
Now THAT's a webmistress!!!Originally posted by tASSyQuestion #5. What the fuck is a NOC monkey for eOffering and IT admin for LAN Research?
basically a NOC monkey in the trade floor environment is the person who gets a pager strapped to them and phone calls at all and any hours of the day/night to come in for a large trade floor operation like eOffering, eTrade, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, etc. and make sure that the systems are up and running properly for each coming days' trade transactions. this was a very stressful job, but at the time also a very lucrative one. i grossed $90K that year and i didn't even have a college degree, and i barely had a high school one.
IT admin for LAM Research was similarly techy and geeky. i installed and monitored the company's apache web server and their FreeBSD servers. LAM Research etched wafers. i thought that i did a perfectly good job working behind a computer and not having to actually interact with anyone because this way i was in charge of my job, my fuck ups, and all of the aftermath - whether good or bad. there were no unknowns, but i became a total hermit. i am still something of a hermit today, i prefer beach walks at home to loud clubs at night.

If that's the case, there are hardly any webmasters, I don't know very many people who can setup everything from scratch.
I think you are off, to me it's someone who manages the day to day of his/her website(s), meaning html, ftp, traffic etc.Comment

I don't feel that is a proper definition of webmaster or webmistress.
If someone can make 6 figures a year from just promoting affiliate programs on-line whether it's through submitting or owning tgp's or whatever it is you do, I think that makes you a successful webmaster/webmistress.
Even if you can't code html by hand, as long as you still know how to get traffic and convert it, that's good enough. just use wysiwyg. dont matter if the code is fucked up, as long as it works and u make money.
No point in knowing how to set up servers if you can't make a lot of money promoting sponsors. A lot of people with technical knowledge still cannot make money or don't know how to sell.
What's the point of knowing how to code shit if you can't sell?Last edited by Worried; 04-21-2007, 01:37 PM.Comment

Also, real webmistresses already make enough money for themselves and don't need to advertise that they are female on webmaster boards for attention. They just do their own thing and keep it on the down-low.
Also, I see a lot of people with technical knowledge who are smart as fuck and know how to code all sorts of complicated shit but they dont know how to make money. thats why they will always work for someone else. Someone who is smart will HIRE those people to work for them , not BE one of them... just my opinion.
MAking money is the most important part.Last edited by Worried; 04-21-2007, 01:40 PM.Comment

That's fine, I respect what you do. I never said it wasn't enough. I am just saying that I know of some female webmistresses that make a lot of money only promoting sponsors, they don't work for sponsors and they don't feel a need to have a presence on the boards because they work for themselves, so they would gain nothing out of it.
This goes for both sexes. For people who don't work for sponsors it's not always necessary to have a board personality.Comment
