My mom used to bore me to near death by here interest in gardening. However, over the last year something has happened where I feel the need to re-learn growing my own veg, etc. I don't have backyard though..so only a really big balcony that I am trying to turn into a potted garden this summer. Anybody else garden?

Only a lawn, I'm travelling quite alot and simply don't have the time for a real garden, but I grew up with one as well...similar experiences with my parents, real gardening freaks.

Yeah. A huge lawn and some areas are for gardening. My wife takes care of the garden and I do the lawn.
Maybe one day when I retire I could get interested in gardening. But at this point in time, I think it's a waste of time. I like looking at it, but getting down on my knees and do to it what needs to be done to keep it nice, no thanks.. not my idea of fun

I am actually happy to not have a lawn..I am allergic to bee stings so I try to keep flowers away too. However, I like the idea of growing veggies. I must be getting old.Comment

When I was growing up my parents had several huge greenhouses and fields of various different things. We had a commercial business selling annual flowers and produce. I didn't appreciate it back then, but now I cannot wait to get another greenhouse, plant a garden and fruit trees. I haven't been able to in the past few years.
I have a renewed passion for gardening and home grown things. I even saw this on TV www.tryagarden.com and want it
I can't wait until we buy a house so I can experiment

My family always had killer vegetable gardens, compost heap, toolshed full of tools, the whole 9 yards and I miss it. Nothing like digging up a potato, wiping off the dirt and biting right into it. I dont remember eating any store bought vegetables when I was little.
I want a garden myself now too.43-922-863 Shut up and play your guitar.

I have several flower gardens & really like working in them. Gets me away from the computer.
I have always grown tomato plants - at least in Indiana where the very best tasting tomatoes are grown. I have not had good luck here in Florida. I have even brought back Indiana soil to grown them in. Just not the same!Comment

I used to hate all the gardening stuff until I turned ~16 and started to grow cannabis.
I don't grow that anymore but I do have tomatoes, chili and salad now.Comment

When we bought our first house when I was married we had a HUGE garden. Spent days tilling it, treating the soil, etc. We had so many veggies that we were begging friends to take them.
I used to have one here but it was at Wig's ;) He had a HUGE space he had okra, maters, squash, corn, beans, peppers, etc. Then he put up a sports court
I don't have any land that gets a decent amount of sun and is flat. I tried containers one year and that does well for tomatoes, but for beans, okra, squash, I'd get maybe 5 pieces ripe at a time - not exactly enough to cook, lol.
I tried strawberries on the deck but the dogs were eating them about 2 weeks before they'd ripen.Comment

One thing about gardening, it spoils you for buying produce in the grocery store. I'm VERY lucky to live near orchards and one I frequent sells sweet potatoes, peppers, peaches, apples, green beans, tomatoes and probably some other things I miss by not going every week. Everything has SO much more flavor than the crap in the stores.Comment

Organics are the way to go; everything is so fake and processed nowadays.
I think gardening will make you happy, Sarah.

Recently I have missed living around farmers where you can just pull up to their place abd buy a huge box of whatever they grow. You can do that in many parts of the UK but not really in London. Actually, farm shops are very trendy in the UK at the moment but one of the downfalls of living in a city is the lack of that sort of thing. One thing about gardening, it spoils you for buying produce in the grocery store. don't worry..peppers/capsicums is one of those vegetables that has different names in different countries. They are peppers in the UK and in the USA but capsicums in Australia.Oops, sorry, I thought the word translated the same. I meant Capsicum: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CapsicumComment

Our garden has really poor soil quality, so 2 years ago, I had 20 tonnes of soil/compost delivered and redid the entire thing. It took me 2 days, 1 wheelbarrow and sore arms just to shift the compost in from the road where it was dumped. Last year I planted a load of plants and trees and this year is the veggies.
All the garden waste I generated when I did the rehaul 2 years ago I put in a giant compost heap I made and the whole thing is looking fantastic now - composting is great fun, and very rewarding to regenerate the goodies for the plants from garden waste.
I now have 3 compost holding areas - done/nearly done/ just started. The heat inside the heap of 'just started' is incredible.
I love gardening - I'm crap at it, but I love it anyway.

I've got a nice little garden here. Growing up with the fresh veggies, I just can't stand the crap in the stores. You should be able to grow tomatos and peppers in pots. Definitely herbs. It relieves a lot of stress!Comment

The Irish have the best idea..... lol. Take a potato... cut it about 3/4 of the way in half.....My mom used to bore me to near death by here interest in gardening. However, over the last year something has happened where I feel the need to re-learn growing my own veg, etc. I don't have backyard though..so only a really big balcony that I am trying to turn into a potted garden this summer. Take a rosebush stem.... plug it into the potato and bury it. The nutrients from the potato will help the rosebush stem to continue to grow into a new bush!Comment

Been growing in 2 locations for years. One in the northeast and one in the southwest desert. Totally 2 different styles.

The ugly ass bushed the builder put in front of my house are coming out this weekend and a veggie garden is going down in its place. Got great Southern exposure for Tomatoes. Bet my neighbors are going to hate me this year. Especially the one next door that is the squawking old hen of the street.Comment

I was thinking of documenting my attempts on a blog for that reason.
My only issue is that I am going to be away for two weeks at the end of June and start of July. So, if I plant tomatoes or something now I am going to have a problem since nobody will be here to water them, etc for those two weeks.Comment
