If it were me and those were my only two choices, I'd take the M3. Having driven one before I think they drive really well and have great power. I like the look and feel of European cars better than American cars too. But it seems to me like you want the Vette, so you should probably go for it.

2001 was the first year with the E46. They had a lot of serious engine out problems. I had an 03M3smg for a few years and it was flawless. I'd go with the M3 over the Vette,but absolutely have a qualified BMW dealership do a PPI on it.

Sounds like you've already decided so who cares what others think.
The reasons you give for not wanting the M3 says to me get the vette.
