Tried talking to a carrier about your really cool product, been their down that , flew 1/2 across the world to do it, didn't work out, you cant get in. I do believe at some point mobile will catch on, the iPhone might work if you can carry a charger ever where you go. Hey guys don't get me wrong im a total tech buff, i have my hands in any sort of new tech coming out, I was just at the web 2.0 conf and guess what nobody was talking about mobile. and your point is completely right about joe schmo not knowing how to use their handset, also note that while a phone can or may download a clip which is usually limited to 500k or even less, that also doesn't mean their phone can stream. Talk about nightmares with support. Sure "some" people are making money but if you really get a honest opinion of them and not their company media training talk you will know the truth, the people making the most money are the ones selling the tech to you. I still play around with mobile and have been since 2001 but am i counting to make thousands of millions hell no.. I'm more focused now on getting that surfer over to my site to pay me $30 instead of .86 cents. |
what phone does the average person get when he signs up to a mobile company?
-the free one what makes money for carriers? -pics, text, video, wallpapers, etc... what phone is the free one? -one that can handle all of the above :) if there's money to be made, they will make sure people get the product capable of it. :thumbsup |
FWIW, Gateway is doing some great stuff with mobile video and trying to get interest going on the wmlprogramming Yahoo group. Unfortunately most of the people with the resources to contribute to those efforts already have agreements in place that don't jive well with contributing to the community, so it's left to the upstarts who everyone established in the business chooses to ignore.
In other words you won't see WAAT and the like doing anything to further the state of mobile development - best to keep the little guys away and soak up what little money there is in a market that doesn't know how to use the products. But hey, that's business. It'll be another year or two at least before the floodgates are fully opened and some new faces can start making real money. In the meantime, as I've said already... there's money in mobile right now for those who are willing to not overspend. The bigger your scale, the less likely you are to get by without support from more profitable businesses. |

Yeup, some good info brought to light in this thread - thanks to all who have chimed in :thumbsup |
not to change subjects but I have put a lot of my time an energy into working on mobile and giving a lot of that information away for free, hence my side when I have free time project http://mvstreaming.com im always welcoming people to help jump aboard, what im doing it not for money but a lot for the educational of video esp in the streaming area.
Video both downloading and streaming is a huge mess and what works for one person isn't going to work for another. Also a consumer doesn't understand why his mobile wont stream when he can download a small clip (under 500k) . my last and only advice before thinking of going into mobile is really be carefull, make sure you have your own product or the people who you team up with have a great product and dont charge you an arm and a leg for it. Another thing is a really good marketing budget which people tend to forget. They may sign up for a program or use someone elses tech but well thats only half the battle. Alot of he major Search engines have PPC for mobile now and well charge anywhere from 5 to 20 cents depending on things so that 1.99 wallpaper that you share with the carrier, technology owner minus the ppc your little pile of pennies gets smaller. This are just things to be aware of, im not trying to discourage anyone from doing this, just be careful. |
