I know people that have been doing this for a very long time. Easy way to get backlinks, and hide it in the code as well.

Sure but its nice to get backlinks from the correct categories and having many themes each locked to a category/niche helps the process along quite nicely. Linkbacks from unrelated categories don't usually count as much as same category backlinks.
