    why the fuck are the taxes using airmiles more for first class

    booked my flights to toronto.

    i'm going first - only one seat available so i stuffed the GF in coach - she's ok with it and doesn't whine about that she's just happy to go and there was no more seats in first available..


    so using miles to fly and the taxes on my seat were $90 and $45 for hers

    WHAT THE FUCK? we're on the same flight

      Uhm.

      You should book TWO tickets for coach and tell your girlfriend that you'll be giving up the first class seat since there's not one available for her as well and you don't want to be in first class if she can't be there with you.

              Sleazy, if you look closely, those aren't ticket fees, but rather transport canada fees, airport fees, security fees, and NavCanada fees. Then you pay GST on those too.

                      i was in coach once a few years back when i was married. this guy came back and asked the girl beside me if she would trade seats with him so he could sit beside his wife. I asked him if he'd take my wife in trade for his 1st class ticket.

                              My guess is that they are charging a normal sales tax on your ticket price (or price assumed for your ticket if you are using airmiles). If the sales tax is lets say 5% then the taxes would be higher on your first class ticket because your ticket's value is much higher than a coach seat's value (or assumed value if your using airmiles). The assumed value of your first class ticket might be $900 where ass your girlfriends coach ticket assumed value might be $450. You would in turn have to pay more sales tax which would increase your overall "taxes/surcharges" higher than your girlfriends coach ticket.

                                  Perhaps its a percentage based on the dollar amount of the ticket and since first class is more expensive than coach, the taxes are too?

                                      I dunno, but I haven't booked my Toronto flight yet, but while looking I discovered it costs almost as many miles to fly 200 miles to Toronto as it does to fly 6,000 to Hawaii.

                                                  Taxes are based on the price of the ticket so it only makes sense her ticket is less than yours, even though yours is "free". Same thing happens to people who work for airlines and pay taxes on their non-rev flights.

                                                  It's also akin to going to a restaurant, getting a freebie meal and tipping on what the meal WOULD have been, not what you actually paid.

                                                  And if you're not kidding about putting the GF in coach while you sit in first, I'm cyber-kneeing you in the nuts!! ;)
