May 1 - The Date for my gastric bypass

I'm excited, I have wanted to do this for a couple of years now but with no insurance it has been cost prohibitive until now.

The doctors I am going through have a real good system. Not only do I have the surgery, but there is also a psychologist and therapist who run intensive groups that I will have available to me for the next 3 years...I'm not looking at this surgery to fix the problem, but to give me a head start towards staving off diabetes *my last test was 125, 126 is diabetic* while working on my own personal issues regarding food.

I'm excited about being down below not just 300, but 200 sometime in about 12 months...you guys won't recognize me ;)

Oh, and if I die...one last GFY!!!

Good Luck !! This is a life changing operation. Remember that it will only help ease things but it will not fix problems so after you do it and once you start losing weight try to find the real problem and try to address it as it will help you become a happier person
Keep us posted !

I had it on March 5th and its a strange experience not being able to eat much and not ever really being hungry.
I am very happy I made the decision and have absolutely no regrets.

Which Gastric Bypass are you gettiing? Roux-NY (sp), Lap-band or MGB (Mini gastric bypass). Which dr are you using?

I didn't have a G.B but I did lose 150+ lbs in less than a year. I thought about the surgery, but opted against it.

I can give you some advice that I have learned from friends who have had it...

1) this is not just a way of making your stomach smaller. This is a lifestyle change. The surgery itself will make you eat less, but only YOU can choose to eat right and excercise!
2) You CAN gain the weight back. I have friends with the traditional GB as well as lap-band who have put on at least 50% of the original weight they lost because they dind't make a life change
3) You WILL lose your hair from the rapid weight loss. Take every vitamin they recommend EVERY TIME> It supplies the nutrients your body needs and can minimize the hair loss. I lost about half my hair before I realized I needed to take vitamins for it, and I was only doing excercise and a balanced diet.. no surgery.

I wish you the very best of luck and success in your new life! It IS a new life. People will look at you different, talk to you different and act different around you. You will no longer be stared at when getting onto a plane. You won't be made fun of for being out of breath when walking into a store from you car. You will be a NORMAL person. It's a BIG life change. You will need the support of your friends and family BIG TIME!

Congrats!

I know a couple of people who had it done and they have no problems drinking, they get drunk quicker and can't drink as much and if they drink shots it hits very hard.
I am going out drinking for the first time next weekend and my friends are looking forward to seeing me get drunk from 1 or 2 beers instead of me drinking them under :D

Eros:

I have no idea how big you are, but no one, even if you are over 300 pounds, needs a gastric bypass operation to lose weight and get in shape. I am going to tell you something that you don't want to hear. These gastric bypasses are very risky operations. A lot of people die from the procedure and many more have complications afterwards.

What you really need is to get your eating under contool and exercise. These gastric bypasses are gruesome operations that will fuck your body and health up for many years to come. There is no short cut and in the best case you will look like a horrible shriveled version of yourself.

Better you lift some weights and get into cardio and home cooking and healthy food. You can look like a statue of a Greek God in a couple of years if you really put your mind into it.

There's going to be a lot of people here encouraging you to get this operation. Don't listen to any of them unless they send you a photo of themselves with their shirt off. Cancel immediately, save some money and don't risk your life for this unhealthy distraction.

"The most commonly cited mortality rate for bariatric surgical operations, across the United States, is 0.5%. That looks pretty good, till you do the math and realize that means about 1 out of 200 patients will experience a fatal result."

Thanks for all the supporting comments...tomorrow is the big day.

I had a great little party with my family and closest friends last night. Today will be spent eating a normal lunch, the rest of the day on pretty much a liquid diet.

Give me about a month, and I will start posting some before and after pics...hell I will soon be much skinnier than DrinkingHard...then he and Anthony can no longer make fun of my weight LOL

What changes did you make in your diet and exercise? 150lbs is a lot of weight to lose.

What surgoen is doing your surgery? The reason I ask is that I noticed that you maybe located here in Las Vegas. I know all the Bariatric Surgeons here in town and am just curious.

Take care and Best Wishes!

Eros.. my grandmother had the surgery 3 years ago and you would not reconize her today... my wife and I took care of her through her recovery so if you need anything bro just give an ICQ and one of us will be over... I would reccomend doing the suport groups.. my grandmother still does her's all the time... they helped her alot because talking with people who ate food.. I mean it's life changing choice to go through with and it's a healthy one... she was on more meds thatn a aids patient before the surgery.. the day of her surgery when she got out of the hospital she was getting better... now she takes NONE... certian things will set her down though...

hit me up if you wanna chat bro.. were local... maybe grab a bite or something she can come and you can talk to her before.. maybe ease ya about it

Dr. Atkinson is without a doubt the best is town. You are in great hands. His laparoscopic skills are awesome. Their follow-up program is top notch as well.

If you ever need anything, please don't hesitate to ask!

What's it going to cost? Could you hire a personal trainer or nutritionist instead? is it a willpower thing?
